Angel Reese says she is "heartbroken" after her franchise, Chicago Sky, fired its head coach, Teresa Weatherspoon , after a poor end to the WNBA season.

Reese enjoyed a record-breaking rookie season under Weatherspoon's guidance after being picked No.7 overall by the Sky in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Speaking on her podcast, "Unapologetically Angel", released just hours before Weatherspoon's ruthless dismissal after less than a year in the role, Reese credited her head coach with enabling her instant success.

And just moments after news of her firing emerged from the Chicago Sun Times, Reese took to social media to share an emotional statement. She is now facing up to a complete change in outlook at the franchise ahead of her second season in the WNBA, with attention now turning to appointing a new head coach.

"I’m heartbroken," Reese wrote. "I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life.

"She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me. Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a black women in sports when nobody believes in you.

"You had a tough job. All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year & when your back was against the wall, you always believed. I came to Chicago because of YOU.

"You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in a short amount of time that will last forever. I’ll never question God why he brings people in my life and takes them away from me in the capacity that I need them but i’ve always believed everyone is in your life for a reason and a season.

"You were the best reason & season. You didn’t deserve this but I can’t thank you enough. I love you Tspoon."

While Reese insists Weatherspoon did not deserve to be fired, she saw her team collapse after the Paris Olympics break after a promising start. The Sky lost 13 of its last 16 games, ending the season bottom of the Eastern Conference.

Their 13-27 record saw them ranked 10th across the WNBA, missing out on the playoffs while Reese was ruled out from the last handful of games of the season due to a wrist injury. Whoever takes over in Chicago will inherit a promising roster with Reese and fellow rookie Kamilla Cardoso ready to build on their first seasons in the professional ranks.

Yeah, it's so hard for a black woman in the wnba..? What utter bullshit. This, coming from a woman who trashed and bullied another player in her league for being white, straight and a better player. Gtfoh with that trash.
