Rapper Chino XL’s family recently revealed his cause of death in a statement.

“With the most profound sadness imaginable, we share the news that our beloved father decided to end his own Life,” the statement read. “It’s been the most painful and personal experience of our lives but in honor of Suicide Awareness Month, we decided to share this truth. Dad would hope that this news may help someone else stay alive.”

Chino’s family released the statement on Friday. They hope to use their tragedy to help heal and provide a preventable moment for others suffering from mental illness. Chino had battled depression throughout his life, and in 2020 he was diagnosed with congenital heart failure, according to TMZ.

The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s office cited Chino’s official cause of death as being asphyxia as a result of ligature hanging.

According to TMZ, “in the collective words of his daughters: ‘Our father was our rock and our best friend. Papa Bear loved us and taught us so much. Hundreds of emails, texts, chats and beautiful posts and comments on social media, have shown us that Dad was a fountain of strength to so many. He encouraged and comforted pretty much everyone in his path and left this dimension with an untouchable creative legacy. We are grateful beyond words for our time with Dad and are overwhelmed by the immeasurable global outpouring of love from around the world. We will forever navigate this catastrophic loss and ask for continued privacy.’”

Chino died at the age of 50 in July. His death was a blow to the hip-hop community as many were devastated by his death. Chino’s passing was publicly made known after the Instagram account Rap Booklets honored the emcee in a post dedicated to his album Here to Save You All shared on their page.

“We at Rap Booklets send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Chino XL, who passed away today at the age of 50,” the post's caption read.

Shortly after the announcement hip-hop fans began paying tribute to Chino and his legacy on X, formerly Twitter. Since reports of the East Coast native's death have started popping up online, a plethora of people have used X to share how much the music-maker meant to hip-hop, thanking him for all that he contributed to the genre.

"Rest in Power Chino XL. I’m grateful I had a chance to see you perform just a bit over two months ago. You will go down in history as one of the greatest lyricists of all time @CHINOXL," one X user wrote. A second added: "You were a giant, super supreme, top tier lyricist of the highest caliber.
