LIV Golf star infamously called out Tiger Woods at Presidents Cup before quickly regretting it

Abraham Ancer made quite the name for himself at the 2019 Presidents Cup after the Mexican star called out the great Tiger Woods - and he got exactly what he wanted

Ancer - who is not representing the International Team this time around due to competing on the LIV Golf circuit - set his sights on taking down arguably the greatest golfer of all time at the 2019 event. Woods was representing Team USA as a playing captain, fresh off becoming a 15-time major champion at the Masters that year.

Having re-found his form, Woods featured alongside his 11 U.S. teammates in the Sunday singles of the 2019 matchplay clash, but his name had become a target in the build-up.

Heading into the tournament, International member Ancer was quizzed on who he fancied taking on in Melbourne in the singles, and the former PGA Tour-turned-LIV competitor had a simple answer. "I would like to play against Tiger."

Remarkably this is what he was given after Ancer and Woods were paired against each other, after they were revealed as the players competing in the first match of the day. Not many players at the top of men's professional golf have gotten the better of Woods during his career, and this proved no different.

Woods' response to the call-out was a typically impressive one, easing Ancer aside 3&2, helping the American team go on to win the clash 16-14 on away soil. Speaking after his team's victory, Woods revealed exactly what went right for him across the week, whilst finishing with a cheeky message for Ancer too.

"I hit it well this week," said Woods after the tournament. "I was responsible for three points, JT [Justin Thomas] and I went and got two, and I happened to play well and got Abe today [Ancer], and, Abe wanted and he got it." It does not take much to inspire Woods, but there is no doubt Ancer's comments only helped.

As the dust settled on the event five years ago, Ancer was finally able to give his side of the story, insisting the comment was from a call out, more earning the opportunity to play against one of the sport's greats. "When they asked me that at Mayakoba," Ancer explained later.

"First of all that question was in Spanish, so the tone when I said it, it was never like cocky or challenging or anything like that. At the moment I thought it would be a great experience, which it was. No matter what, with the outcome of the match, I would have gained a lot. I would have become a better player just from being in that situation.”

He didn’t "call out" Tiger. Just said he wanted to play him in singles. Lesson learned, hopefully, don’t poke the bear(Tiger)
