SNL mocks Chappell Roan as Bowen Yang transforms into Moo Deng in risky comedy sketch

Saturday Night Live mocked Chappell Roan in a risky new skit that left fans reeling.

Viewers were in for a few surprises as Bowen Yang transformed into Moo Deng, the pygmy hippo from Thailand who has become a viral sensation in recent weeks. Yang jumped on this moment, where he wore full fancy dress, to draw extraordinary 'parallels' between the hippo and the 26-year-old singer .

Perhaps referring to Chappell canceling her recent tour date to perform at the VMAs, then also pulling out of the All Things Go Music Festival this weekend, Yang did not hold back as he mocked her to Weekend Update host Colin Jost.

He chronicled the hippo’s busy schedule, saying, “For the past 10 weeks, I have been going nonstop. Running around, eating lettuce, trying to bite the water from a hose.”

Moo Deng compared her experiences to those of Chappell, who has been open and honest about her struggles with new found fame. He said: "It has come to the point where I need to set some boundaries."

He defiantly added: "Reminder: women owe you nothing. When I’m in my enclosure tripping over stuff, biting my trainer’s knee, I am at work. That is the project. Do not yell my name or expect a photo just because I’m your parasocial bestie or because you appreciate my talent."

When co-host Jost said it must be 'so stressful having the whole world watching you,' Yang said: "Honestly, sometimes I feel like I live my life in a cage, like an animal trapped in a zoo for people to look at,"

Jost did not mince his words when he said: "Your life sounds a lot like Chappell Roan's lately. Do you know Chappell Roan?"

Yang's Moo Deng then appeared to backtrack and show some support to Chappell. He said: "I’m 10 weeks old, Colin, of course I know Chappell Roan. By the way, leave her alone. Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health…it’s what society does. It puts young women on pedestals only to know them down with shellfish."

Meanwhile Chappell sparked fury from fans after she pulled out of a music festival appearance this weekend at the last minute.

The star, whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, left fans stunned after she decided not to perform after being "overwhelmed" by public scrutiny. She has been open about her struggles about her meteoric rise to fame.

This weekend, she was due to be one of the performers at the All Things Go Music Festival in New York and Washington DC. Now fans have had their say, and are less than impressed with the no show.
