LeBron James' relationship with Drake seemingly over after appearance at Kendrick Lamar's Pop Out

Drake has unfollowed Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James on Instagram, with fans suspecting it's because of his ongoing beef with fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar .

Lamar and Drake have been involved in a rap feud for several years, but it escalated dramatically in March 2024. Rappers Lamar, Future, and Metro Boomin released the song "Like That" which was a response to Drake and J Cole's song "First Person Shooter".

In the song Cole claimed that he, Drake, and Lamar are the "big three" in rap today, but the response by the three rappers suggested otherwise. Since then, several diss tracks have been released by both Lamar and Drake with the situation turning personal, dividing rap fans to side with one artist as a result.

James is a fan of both Drake and Lamar but attended the latter's "The Pop Out: Ken & Friends" concert in Inglewood, California on Juneteenth, 2024. James was seen in the crowd enjoying Lamar's "Not Like Us" which includes lyrics dissing Drake, and now the NBA legend has lost a high-profile follower.

While Drake's decision to unfollow James was spotted on Tuesday, it's been rumored that the rapper has been distant from James for several months. Drake is a massive NBA fan and is often seen courtside at Scotiabank Arena to watch the Toronto Raptors, and has become close friends with many of the league's biggest stars.

Drake is known to be close with the likes of Stephen Curry, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Kevin Durant, who were all on the Team USA roster alongside James for the Paris Olympics this summer. James was also considered to be a part of that close friendship group.

The rapper showed his support on Instagram ahead of the Olympics by posting photos of Curry, Gilgeous-Alexander, and Durant wearing Team USA uniforms on his story. Fans quickly noticed that Drake didn't post anything about James, Team USA's most high-profile player.

In April, months before the Olympics began and when the beef between Drake and Lamar was reaching boiling point, James attempted to show he was impartial and keep his relationship with both rappers. "Nothing like 2 heavyweights doing What They Do Best! For the love of the sport," James wrote on X.

James and Drake have hung out on several occasions over the years and collaborated on certain projects. Drake filmed a congratulatory message when James became the all-time points scorer in NBA history in February 2023, and the basketball legend narrated over a video produced when Drake won Billboard's Artist of the Decade award in 2021.

"It's not luck my good friends. It's certain destiny," James said when listing Drake's achievements in that video. Fast forward to 2023, Drake said in a pre-recorded message shown on the NBA broadcast after James broke the record: "What a legendary night in NBA history. You're breaking the all-time scoring record."
