LIV Golf boss breaks important golf rule during public meeting with PGA Tour rival

Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the boss of LIV Golf, seemed to flout the official dress code at Carnoustie during his meeting with Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour chief , at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship's opening round on Thursday.

Despite some of the sport's biggest names participating in the DP World Tour this week , attention has shifted to two amateur competitors in the Pro-Am event. Al-Rumayyan, governor of the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF), is playing alongside Monahan, the PGA Tour commissioner. These two men are central to the peace deal between the Tour and LIV.

The golf world has been divided for a while due to the creation of LIV , especially after the PGA Tour decided to ban any players who transitioned to the breakaway league from Saudi Arabia.

However, since the surprise framework agreement announcement last June, both sides have been striving to reach a resolution, although a final deal is yet to be sealed. For now, Al-Rumayyan's focus shifts to the golf course.

Despite previous hostilities, the duo appeared cheerful during their first round. Al-Rumayyan, also the chairman of Premier League club Newcastle United, chose to represent The Magpies during his opening round at Carnoustie.

However, his attire seems to flout the Carnoustie dress code, which specifies no soccer jerseys on site: "Golf shirts must be either collared shirts or otherwise recognised golfing attire. T-shirts, football shirts and any shirts carrying slogans, numbers or non-golfing related illustrations, are not permitted," the policy insists.

While some may argue that the Saudi leader's Newcastle gear is more a quarter-zip top than a jersey, it seems to breach the dress code, particularly with the presence of the club emblem, which certainly qualifies as 'non-golfing related illustrations'.

Indifferent to strict rules, Al-Rumayyan kicked off his first round at Carnoustie alongside Monahan and their professional counterparts, Dean Burmester and Billy Horschel, under a cloud of camaraderie, with no traces of hostility present on the first tee. It's noteworthy to mention, there's still no concrete deal to mend the rift in the heart of golf's recent situation.

Last month saw pivotal figures from PGA Tour Enterprises and PIF convene in New York, eager to fast-track dialogue. DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings was also present and has since spoken out optimistically, telling Sky Sports at the BMW PGA Championship, "I'm very hopeful," adding, "I think it's a wonderful opportunity for the game to come together and become more harmonious and global."

"There's an ongoing process within the US between the PGA Tour and Public Investment Fund, but in the room those discussions are ourselves, DP World Tour and the Strategic Sports Group. I think everyone has the right attitude going into that and doing the right thing for the game and taking it forward. I see it as an opportunity and, hopefully, it will be what's good for players, fans and everyone else."
