Wendy's to launch special Krabby Patty Meal for the 25th Anniversary of SpongeBob

Fans of the popular animated series Spongebob Squarepants will be getting a welcome surprise in October as the fast food chain plans on launching a Krabby Patty Meal this month.

While the Krusty Krab, the fictional underwater eatery that serves up the famous Krabby Patty, may never be real fans of the long-running Nickelodeon cartoon can get the next best thing starting Oct. 8. The meal includes a "Krabby Patty Kollab" cheeseburger and a "Pineapple Under the Sea" frosty served with a side of fries. The meal will be available for a limited time at all US and Canadian locations.

The Krabby Patty, while the same as a traditional cheeseburger includes an additional slice of cheese and a "top secret" Krabby Kollab sauce the chain announced on Wednesday. The frosty is a regular vanilla frosty with pineapple and mango flavoring added and swirled on top.

The fast food chain hopes to tap into millennial nostalgia for the animated series which has continued its popularity during its nearly two decades run on the air. Burger King has hoped on the specialty meal trend when they announced this week that they are partnering with MGM's "The Addams Family" animated film franchise with its "Wednesday's Whopper" that sports a purple-colored bun. The popularity of the Netflix show "Wednesday" starring Jenna Ortega will likely increase the popularity of Wednesday's Whopper.

Wendy's said in a press release that it only "makes sense that two of the most iconic squares in pop culture are teaming up," a reference to the chain's famous square burger patties.

Having the meal include already existing menu items makes it easier for the employees to assemble the specials. McDonalds in the past has often released celebrity meals such as the Travis Scott special that was available for a limited time in 2020. The viral nature of these specials on the internet has often brought financial success to the chains that offer them and Wendy's is hoping to do the same.

As the price of fast food has continued to increase over the last several years, companies are battling for consumers' money as people are going out to eat less and spending less. Many companies have released meal deals such as McDonalds 5 Dollar Meal Deals and Wendy's $5 Dollar Biggie Bag. It remains to be seen how much these deals are increasing sales or if they are at all.
