NC State quarterback Grayson McCall is in “positive” condition after he was stretchered off and taken to hospital following a brutal hit in the clash with Wake Forest.

On Saturday, the Wolfpack fell 34-30 to Wake Forest with McCall prematurely leaving the game due to injury. The 23-year-old took a massive hit before fumbling while running the ball up the middle on third down inside opposition territory in the first quarter.

Upon the collision, McCall’s helmet flew off when he was hit in the head and he appeared to be unconscious when he hit the ground. Wake Forest recovered the fumble and returned it 88 yards, while the hit was not flagged for targeting.

NC State head coach Dave Doeren addressed McCall’s health when he took to the podium after the game, saying: “All the reports back from the hospital are positive. Once they’re done going through all the tests, obviously we’ll have more information at that time.”

The NC State training staff immediately ran onto the field during play to tend to the quarterback following the brutal hit. McCall was down for several minutes as the medical staff prepared to load him onto the cart with his jersey cut from his body.

Once he was put on the back of the cart, McCall - who was 3-of-5 passing for 42 yards - was seen hugging his parents, who made it onto the field, before being driven off. As McCall exited Carter-Finley Stadium, he raised his left hand to the relief of the crowd.

The loss to Wake Forest was McCall’s first start since Sept. 14 against Louisiana Tech. He left that game with what the team said was an undisclosed injury, walking to the locker room with a towel over his head after leaving the game. He did not return.

McCall is enjoying his first season with NC State after transferring from Coastal Carolina, throwing for 476 yards and three touchdowns with just two interceptions. In October 2023, McCall was knocked out and suffered a concussion when he got hit while sliding, his head hitting the turf on the play.

The concussion ended McCall’s career at CCU as he didn’t return for the rest of the season. Over five years with the Chanticleers, McCall was one of the most productive quarterbacks in college football , throwing for over 10,000 yards as the team’s starting quarterback.
