Riley Keough, the granddaughter of the king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley , opened up about her family life in conversation with Oprah Winfrey .
Recently, Riley shared with the public more about her late mother Lisa Marie Presley . who prepared a memoir before her death. Lisa Marie kept records and discussed hours of the story of her life at length.
After her death, Riley picked up the project and breathed new life into it. The 35-year-old actress remained poised during the interview as she spoke about her late mother, but one moment caused her to break.
Oprah asked Riley about her mother's marriage to Michael Jackson. She remarked: "Your mom had such an enormous life she lived in Graceland and Neverland in one lifetime.”
Riley agreed and shared her view of her mother's love for the Thriller singer. “She was obsessed with him,” she said, “He would come to the house and she would run to the bathroom and panic and want to get herself all dressed up for him. And she just adored him.”
Oprah then said that they had Lisa Marie's recordings and played one where she talked about Michael. “He was always super interested in people and he’d really lift them up," Lisa Marie's voice played and instantly her daughter was affected.
As the tape continued, Riley dabbed at her eyes, not because of what her mother was saying but just because of the overwhelming emotion of hearing her voice.
On the recording, Lisa Marie continued: "Because you’re thinking he’s Michael Jackson so he can’t do that or whatever. But he can do it, he can."
"Everyone who gets in his orbit, he’d be really, really interested and fascinated by everything you had to say about what you did," she added, "So he would lift people up. I watched him do it all the time. It was amazing you know, he did it with me.”
After the tape ended, Oprah acknowledged the emotion on Riley's face. “Just hearing her voice right now was striking right?" she noted, "It's a lot so I thank you for being here to talk about it."
Lisa Marie also talked about the king of rock and roll, her father Elvis, in the memoir. “I felt my father could change the weather. He was a god to me. A chosen human being," she wrote. As part of the memoir, she explained the effects of her father's shocking death, including the difficulty of her teen years as she navigated that loss.
In addition, Riley discussed the suicide of her brother , including details that her mother kept his body in the home for two months after the death. The memoir said: "There is no law in the state of California that you have to bury someone immediately. I found a very empathetic funeral home owner ... She said, 'We'll bring Ben Ben to you.'" Benjamin Keough tragically took his own life at the age of 27 in August 2020.
