Tragedy struck when a 13-year-old by of St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana accidentally shot himself dead while handling a firearm at home with two friends present.

Despite being rushed to the hospital after the tragic gunshot accident, beloved son and friend to many, Wyatt Oser, sadly passed away.

Sheriff James Pohlmann described the "cheerful and curious" teen as a model student and compassionate individual, leaving the community deeply heartbroken over the tragic gun accident.

N.P. Trist Middle School mourned the loss of their 8th grader, with counselors offering support to students and staff. Principal Kara Colburn spoke fondly of Wyatt, describing him as a friendly and curious student who always asked how people were doing.

The Oser family released a heartfelt statement, remembering Wyatt as a joyful, cheerful, curious and compassionate young man with a love for sports and a gift for making others laugh. They thanked the community for their support but requested privacy as they grieve their loss.

Sheriff Pohlmann emphasized the importance of gun safety, urging parents to secure firearms properly and ensure they are not accessible to children. He warned that guns are inherently dangerous without proper training and supervision and advised against allowing kids access to them. Pohlmann added that it’s still under investigation whether the gun belonged to the household or was brought in. At this time, he does not expect the family to face charges.

As the community mourns, Wyatt’s tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of firearm safety in homes with children.
