The upcoming Met Gala has gotten some backlash for its seemingly offensive theme was possibly originally picked to demonstrate inclusivity.

As well as an appreciation for Black culture . In a recent Instagram post, Vogue magazine explained that the Met Gala’s 2025 theme , "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style will take the Black dandy as its subject, examining the importance of clothing and style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora." This year for the annual fashion event the co-chairs will include Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour.

Serving as an honorary chair for the Met Gala 2025 is NBA star LeBron James .

The New York Post reported that the idea for the Met Gala stemmed from Monica L. Miller, who is a professor and Chair of Africana Studies at Barnard College and Columbia University. Monica penned the book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.

Monica illustrated in her book that "Black dandyism was both an aesthetic and political construct" as she examined the Black dandy figure from "its earliest depictions in 18th-century art to modern-day representations on runways and in films," The New York Post reported.

Per the news outlet, Miller defined the showing of Black dandyism as a concept that will, "illustrate how Black people transformed from being enslaved and stylized as luxury items, acquired like any other signifier of wealth and status, to autonomous self-fashioning individuals who are global trendsetters."

Vogue mentioned that the forthcoming exhibit will have garments, paintings, photographs, and video, which all will delve into the style of Black men. Despite the good intentions, many critics are slamming the latest Met Gala theme.

"Sounds like a recipe for appropriation disaster…Stylists, study up!," one person commented on Instagram under Vogue’s post announcing the theme.

A second added: "Am I the only nervous about this?' another shared. "A good theme but let’s hope no one will appropriate cultures."

Many more vented their dislike for the theme on Reddit.

"I feel like this isn't going to go well for a lot of attendees.. I hope everyone is respectful but, there will always be that one guy lol," one commented in the forum. Another noted: "So any white person invited can then be accused of appropriating? This already seems like a dumpster fire."

Someone else commented: "Anna just setting them up," referring to Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.
