Outer Banks is back with a bang, but what exactly transpired at the end of episode five on Netflix?

The much-anticipated series has made its return after over a year, releasing just the first five episodes on the streaming platform.

While fans will have to wait another month for the remaining episodes, there's plenty to ponder over, especially the final moments of the midseason finale.

Outer Banks season 4 part 1 ending explained

    JJ's real parents revealed

In a surprising turn of events towards the end of episode five, JJ (portrayed by Rudy Pankow) locates his father Luke (Gary Weeks), who is residing with Barracuda Mike (Justin Matthew-Smith).

However, they are forced to make a hasty exit when Sheriff Shoupe (Callum Moss) arrives and retreat to the lighthouse.

It is here that Luke unexpectedly confesses that he isn't JJ's biological father and his mum is not his birth mother.

Luke admits that JJ's actual parents are the late Larissa Genrette and Chandler Groff (J Anthony Crane), making JJ a born Kook.

He further explains that Larissa handed JJ over to Luke to ensure his safety, despite Luke's subsequent years of abuse. But why did she feel compelled to do so?

Viewers can expect to learn more about JJ's early life when the drama resumes for part two on Thursday, November 7.

    Sarah and Pope are trapped

Meanwhile, the Pogues uncover a hint that leads them to a crypt where living and dead collide.

As they delve deeper, the crew splits up and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) and Pope (Jonathan Daviss) stumble upon the crypt only to accidentally trap themselves inside.

Hiding in the shadows, they must remain silent as Lightner (Rigo Sanchez) and the Captain (Terence Rosemore) enter the crypt and uncover a scroll in the coffin of one of Blackbeard's closest confidants.

Trying to follow them, the Pogues race up the ladder but the door locks before they can get out, and to add to their panic, it starts pouring down rain causing the crypt to fill with water.

Now faced with the dire situation of being trapped and at risk of drowning, can their friends figure out how to save them?

Outer Banks is available to watch on Netflix.
