Justin Fields given bad news as Pittsburgh Steelers mull over Russell Wilson's return

The Pittsburgh Steelers have yet to make a decision on which quarterback will play this weekend , but the expectation is that Russell Wilson will eventually take over from Justin Fields .

Despite Fields leading the team to an impressive 3-0 start, the Steelers have now lost their last two games with fans being frustrated with the quarterback's erratic play. Fields had originally been slated to be the backup behind Wilson , but the veteran suffered a hamstring injury which has hampered him through the first five games of the season and seen Fields be the starter.

The Steelers are set to face the Las Vegas Raiders this weekend. And Wilson is now back in full training and seemingly available to be selected.

ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested this week that head coach Mike Tomlin does want to see Wilson take over the offense, and will essentially wait to see if Fields' level of play continues to drop before making a move. Meanwhile, former Steelers defensive coordinator Tony Dungy has stated just how much Wilson is working to be the starter after seeing them practice this week while performing at a high level.

He said: "He threw some balls against the Steelers first-string defense that were just right on point. When you saw the guys react to him and shake their heads in admiration, I'm thinking, when this guy gets back in there, he's gonna give them a lift of confidence."

While Fields has given the Steelers a boost offensively with his rushing ability, his limitations as a passer had hurt them in their loss to the Dallas Cowboys - completing just 15-of-27 passes with wide receiver George Pickens looking frustrated.

Wilson was made the Steelers' offensive captain prior to the season beginning, and was named the starter by Tomlin - who clearly saw him as the better option.

When last asked about their quarterback depth chart this week, Tomlin said: "We’re in a little bit different place as I stand here today with Russ. First we'll see if he's able to obviously pull it off and get through the session, and if he does, what the quality of that works like, his ability to protect himself."
