Inside eerily untouched Elvis Presley Graceland bathroom where singer met tragic demise

Decades after his death, Elvis Presley still captures the attention of the American people.

The King of Rock and Roll died in 1977 at the age of 42. His death was most recently talked about in a CBS interview between Oprah and Riley Keough, Elvis' granddaughter.

The two talked about Riley's late mother, Lisa Marie Presley , and Elvis' only child, whose posthumous memoir was released earlier this week, with the Daisy Jones and the Six actress finishing up the writing. Lisa Marie described what it was like losing her father when she was only 9-years-old.

Elvis died at his Graceland home in Memphis, Tennessee. He was discovered by his fiancée at the time, Ginger Alden, on the floor of his bathroom that was attached to his master bedroom suite.

Graceland is an 18-room, million-dollar mansion, that has been open to the public as a museum since 1982. However, the upstairs, including the room where Elvis died, has been closed off in respect for the Presley family.

Even when Elvis was alive, the upstairs was only for the family. It includes Elvis' office, dressing room, Lisa Marie's bedroom, and his master suite.

Graceland's Vice President of Archives and Exhibits, Angie Marchese, did an Instagram Live Q&A last year about the state of the upstairs portion of Graceland.

“It looks as if he just got up and left," Angie said. "It is part of my job to maintain it. So we do go up there to maintain the space."

She continued: "The record on the record player is the last record he listened to. There’s a styrofoam cup that sits on a bookshelf. The bed is made, so we really maintain it the way that Lisa wants us to preserve it. So, unfortunately, [fans] can’t see it, but it is taken care of.”

Lisa Marie recalled in her memoir that she sat by her father's casket when it was on display at Graceland for mourners to share their respects. Years later, Lisa Marie lost her son Benjamin Keough after he tragically died in 2020.

She kept her son's body in her house for two months as she decided where to bury him. Ultimately Benjamin was buried at Graceland, where Elvis' remains reside. When Lisa Marie died last year, she was also buried at the family home.
