Arch Manning suggestion abruptly shut down by Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian

Arch Manning took his chance when it came to him as the Texas Longhorns quarterback - but he's set to ride the bench once again when Quinn Ewers returns with him unlikely to be used going forward .

Texas will face their rival school Oklahoma this Saturday in the Red River Rivalry game with Ewers set to start after recovering from his abdominal injury. Some Longhorns fans want to see more Manning , but they will need to stay patient.

Manning started the last two games for Texas, showing just why he came into college football with so much hype around him. He completed 70 percent of his passes for 12 touchdowns to just two interceptions - leading the Longhorns to two impressive wins.

This led to some fans believing that they should start the sophomore protege, despite Ewers being in his last season as a senior and performing expertly himself. But head coach Steve Sarkisian has poured cold water on Manning taking the job from Ewers this year.

When asked whether Manning could come in for Ewers situationally, Sarkisian told reporters he would not even consider doing that - naming Ewers the stater with him only ever coming in if they're up big or injury strikes.

The head coach said: "When I was a starter, I never wanted the backup coming in the game, even for a play. So I've got respect for a guy who's a starting quarterback and the rhythm that is needed to play with. So, no, that's not something I've ever entertained."

"He wants to learn. He can learn from others. But his development I think has probably been the biggest key. From where he was a year and a half ago when he first got here in spring practice to the way he played last weekend. It's a credit to his work ethic."

Despite Manning looking exciting and being set to take over as the quarterback in 2025, Ewers would always have been likely to be their man moving forward this season. Ewers has completed 73 percent of his passes while throwing for eight touchdowns to just two interceptions, and is in contention to be the number one draft pick in the 2025 class, alongside the likes of Shedeur Sanders , Travis Hunter and Carson Beck .

Manning looks set to take over as Texas' quarterback in the 2025 season, with a host of wide receivers and offensive lineman potentially looking to transfer over to the school to play alongside the generational talent.

The quarterback could declare for the NFL after that season, in the 2026 class, but he could look to stay for another year - having just one season of starting experience in college before making the jump if he is to declare.
