Shoppers threaten to boycott Walmart over 'disappointing' payment method

Walmart customers are finding themselves more and more disappointed with their shopping experiences with the supermarket giant and making it well known.

One outraged customer abandoned his full cart at the checkout after he had his preferred payment method declined as the store did not support it. While ApplePay is hugely popular with consumers and is accepted at over 85 percent of US retail outlets, Walmart do not accept the convenient digital payment method in their stores.

They are instead attempting to encourage customers to use their own version of the system, Walmart Pay. The payment method can only be used by customers via the Walmart app. One annoyed customer posted on Facebook: “How come Walmart doesn’t have Apple Pay? I left the cart there like that’s your problem.”

Another said: "It sucks that they have Walmart Pay, just like Apple Pay, but you have to set it up [on their app]." A third added on X: “What’s the point of Walmart Pay if it never works?” Meanwhile Walmart CEO Doug McMillon has explained why it is the chain hasn’t yet implemented Apple’s tap-to-pay method for the convenience of his customers.

He admitted seeing Apple Pay as a competitor for their own digital product as he said: “We want customers to always open our app in the store.”

The news comes after the retailer implemented changes to its self-checkout process , many customers have taken to social media to air their concerns and frustration over the move. One wrote on Facebook: “I had an overloaded stroller and almost cried when they asked me to stand at the checkout."

Walmart recently implemented new rules to target shoplifting in stores by scaling back on how many self-checkout kiosks they have with the customer hitting out at being forced to make "small talk." She continued: “I hate small talk SO much!!! I love self checkout. Luckily my cashier was friendly [and] didn’t talk nonsense."

The stores that have implemented the restriction only allow shoppers with 15 items or less to go through the checkout, with some only allowing a maximum of ten items. However, it's not just the self-checkout that has been infuriating shoppers at Walmart.

The new rules have seen Walmart reserve self-checkout lanes for Walmart+ subscribers , meaning those who haven’t subscribed have to wait in line at the checkout. Walmart has also introduced limits on the number of items a customer can scan through the self-checkout.
