Disney+ star Sasheer Zamata is living the dream in new Marvel show Agatha All Along

There’s a new witch in town and her name is Sasheer Zamata .

Last month, a spinoff sequel to WandaVision premiered on Disney+ . The show, titled Agatha All Along, follows the antagonist Agatha Harkness after the events of WandaVision. Now the dark witch, with the help of other supernatural beings, is on a journey to regain her powers. The stellar cast includes Kathryn Hahn in the titular character role, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone, Ali Ahn, Joe Locke and Aubrey Plaza.

This is not Sasheer’s first rodeo with Disney. The comedian and the network go way back to her days doing the Disney College Program where she learned to walk on stilts and did puppets. She’s also been a part of Disney-affiliated projects such as ABC’s sitcom Home Economics and Marvel’s animated series, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.

"[Disney’s] a nice house to be housed in, and then being able to be in Agatha All Along, you know, I was a fan of Marvel for so long, and to be able to enter the universe in this way on a show about witches, it's truly a dream," Sasheer told The Mirror US.

Sasheer said in a previous interview that she manifested the role. Before auditioning, she had a series of jokes involving witches in her 2023 comedy special, The First Woman. She further shared with us how she has always been into magical realism and wanted to play a sorceress. She noted that while she was already a fan of WandaVision (created by Agatha All Along frontrunner Jac Schaeffer), she was a big fan of Kathryn. The opportunity came when Sasheer heard the show was being made, and she told her reps that she needed to audition and the rest is history.

The actress plays a witch names Jennifer Kale, whose special powers used to include having a knack for potions. The character currently owns a line of beauty products called Kale Kare, as Jennifer has lost her magic similarly to Agatha and ultimately joined forces with her.

Sasheer teased that fans can expect to see Jennifer go through a "real journey internally and externally." The Potion master is currently struggling being bound and she said it was an "interesting journey" playing her, especially because she can relate to her struggle. "There's been moments in my life where I've felt powerless, and I think many people can relate to that," she said, adding that the timing to the project "felt very right"

"I think watching her kind of realize that she actually does have some sort of power. She does have some agency over herself, even though she didn't have power in her own trial, she was able to save people," she continued, stating how that battle for Jennifer is interesting for the audience.

She mentioned how in the third episode, Jennifer saved the coven with a potion, despite being powerless. She explained that her community gives her strength and the show "illuminates" that with the collection of outcast witches who are "singular and have trust issues," but come together to be something more powerful.

One of those members in her community is her best friend and fellow comedian Nicole Byer. They do a podcast together called Best Friends with Nicole Byer and Sasheer Zamata. This podcast is centered on adult friendship which is a topic Sasheer is so glad they decided on since there’s "not a lot about those." She is also glad to be able to do something "special and just easy to do" with the TV host. Nicole and Sasheer have worked together many times before from improvising to a web series. They were approached by Earwolf to make this podcast because of their "great and undeniable" dynamic which is clear to see and hear.

Sasheer didn’t give much away but said that her and Nicole have been attempting to work on something for a long time so she’s hoping it will be in the works soon. Along with that, she is also hoping to develop some things such as her own projects. While she appreciates being in other people’s projects, she loves "being able to get my voice out there" as well which is another thing she is hopeful for in the future.

Some other things she is hopeful for in the future is being a part of a musical. Sasheer showcased her great singing chops in the show. Her roots lie in music as well as comedy, as she grew up doing music but focused more on comedy. She sang in the church choir and did musicals in high school and college. She called herself lucky to be a part of Agatha All Along where music is a big part. She said she is going to manifest doing a musical and put it out in the universe. Her dream musical would be The Wiz, but Sasheer said she’s too old to play Dorothy (we disagree!).

She also would love to dabble in action and do the kind of roles legendary actress Pam Grier has done: "I like seeing bada-- women kick a--." She further elaborated about why she said Ryan Reynolds’ career was her ideal in an interview with Them .

"I'm open to so many different types of roles. But, yeah, I mentioned Ryan Reynolds, because it seems like he's having so much fun in all his projects. It's just like him playing around, also being a badass and hilarity ensues," Sasheer noted.

"And I feel like I can do that too. I would love to be able to," she added. She went on to say she got a taste of the action, the choreography and the special effects with the show and wants to do more of it.

In the same Them article, she also publicly came out. It’s been a month since the article was published and Zamata said she feels great since announcing her truth to the world. She said her life remains the same as she was "already living my truth before," but now it’s known publicly. She talked about receiving support from people and welcoming messages but she found it funny that they were confused people who thought she was already out.

"It's been great, and I'm glad people know, because I like keeping my life private, but I also didn't want to keep that part of me private. And it's just nice that it's out there," Sasheer said.

New episodes of Agatha All Along are on Wednesdays streaming on Disney+. The season finale is on October 30.
