Inside new planes taking off in 2025 that could be 'gamechanger' for hand baggage rules

A new aircraft design featuring significantly larger overhead compartments could be a game-changer for passengers struggling with airlines' hand luggage rules , allowing them to bring more onboard. For many travelers , flying involves squeezing as much as possible into a small bag and stowing it under the seat, all while hoping to avoid hefty fees and stay within regulations.

Despite the inconvenience of wrinkled clothes and the risk of lost luggage , checking in a bag is often seen as a necessary evil. However, one plane manufacturer may have found a solution.

Airbus has introduced 'Airspace L Bins', replacing the current overhead storage bins that only accommodate flat-laying wheelie cases, wasting a lot of space above. These new compartments promise to provide 60% more cabin luggage space than traditional systems, allowing roller bags to be stored vertically.

They can accommodate cases up to 61cm high, 38cm wide, and 25cm deep and can be installed on different planes within three to five days. Lufthansa is the first airline to retrofit these units, planning to implement them from 2025, according to the Mirror .

"We know from talking with airline customers that bigger bins are a clear need to enhance the passenger experience," stated Charbel Youzkatli, Airbus head of commercial services for Europe.

The decision to reduce the cost of additional hand luggage onboard lies with the airlines . Some might argue that despite having ample space, the extra weight necessitates more fuel and should be charged accordingly.

Airlines have their own policies regarding what passengers can bring onboard flights for free , whether it's one small bag or two. Misunderstanding these rules could prove expensive, particularly if you're forced to pay to check-in a bag.

Airlines typically charge more if you bring an extra bag to the gate rather than checking it in advance, so it's always best to be prepared and understand the specific company's requirements. We've compiled a useful summary of all the different rules from various airlines.

We also have a guide on what items are permitted and prohibited in your hand luggage - make sure to review this before packing to avoid potential delays at security. While some items, such as explosives and sharp knives, are clearly not allowed on planes , others are less obvious. For instance, a certain number of regular lighters are permitted, but a lighter shaped like a gun is not.
