'Secret' product will make your lawn grow a 'deep green color' after winter

As autumn sets in, many gardeners might think it's time to retire the mower, but hold off until you've given your lawn a proper nutrient boost. Fertilizing in October is crucial to prep your grass for the coming winter , ensuring it remains robust and verdant come spring.

Money-saving guru and Everyday Cheapskate founder Mary Hunt has divulged a budget-friendly tip for a lush lawn , stating: "I love a beautiful yard, but I hate spending a lot of money to get it that way, which explains why I am always looking for cheap do-it-yourself ways to kill weeds, grow flowers, and feed lawns."

The trick? Mix your fertilizer with Epsom salt —a natural mineral powerhouse that not only promotes protein buildup in plants but also fosters vigorous root growth. Though often used as a bath soak, Epsom salt is rich in magnesium, essential for plants to soak up sunlight and churn out energy.

By adding Epsom salt to your lawn fertilizer, you're enabling more efficient photosynthesis, allowing the grass to stockpile nutrients before winter dormancy kicks in. This results in stronger roots and more resilient grass that bounces back swiftly in spring, guaranteeing a more luxuriant and greener lawn next year, reports the Express .

How to leverage Epsom salt as homemade lawn fertilizer

Epsom salt may be a game changer for your garden, but it's important to remember it's an addition, not a stand-in for your regular lawn food; while Epsom salt works its magic, your turf will still be craving potassium to fight frost and disease. To get the best of both worlds, snag a fertilizer that’s loaded with potassium but takes it easy on the nitrogen – you’re aiming for resilience and robust roots, not a growth spurt that won’t survive winter’s chill.

When you've picked out your fertilizer, simply stir in the Epsom salt and scatter it over your grass.

Mary shared her pro tip: "Mix four pounds of magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) in a giant bin or bucket with a bag of your favorite lawn food that covers 2,500 sq. ft. Now feed your lawn the same amount of this mixture as recommended on the lawn food bag."

"You'll save a lot of money because you'll be using only half the normal amount of fertilizer. Plus, this formulation cuts down on the nitrogen which makes your lawn grow so fast."

Timing is everything – aim to fertilize a few weeks before the ground turns to concrete, anywhere from late September to mid-October across the UK. A sprinkle of Epsom salt means come spring, your lawn will be greener, thicker, and just plain happier.

Mary also noted: "You'll have the wonderful deep-green color, better root structure, and you won't have to mow as often."
