Netflix fans left in tears after watching Tom Hanks movie that's 'wrongly billed' as comedy

Netflix subscribers are reaching for the tissues after watching the latest Tom Hanks film, which some have quipped that was "wrongly billed" as a laugh riot. The 2022 flick is tucked away in the streaming giant's comedy category and features the Academy Award-winning Tom as a grumpy retiree who spirals into a profound sadness with the passing of his spouse.

But his world gets flipped on its head when he gets new neighbors, including the soon-to-be mom Marisol, who inadvertently stops him from committing suicide. Otto persists in his grim mission to end his life, feeling utterly hopeless without his beloved wife. Yet after three failed attempts—and accidentally saving another man's life in the process—he finds renewed purpose through Marisol and her kids.

Directed by Marc Foster, the film is an adaptation of Fredrik Backman's hit book A Man Called Ove, but Tom's fans were not prepared for the emotional rollercoaster.

The promotional poster for the film features the Forrest Gump star with a frown and a cat, accompanied by the tagline: "Fall in love with the grumpiest man in America."

Audiences were expecting to be amused by Tom's portrayal of a grumpy old man, but they were left heartbroken when the true story unfolded. "I was trying to find a movie to watch on Netflix, so under the COMEDY category I chose the movie A Man Called Otto not knowing what it was about and now I'm bawling my freaking eyes out with that," one viewer tweeted after watching, reports the Mirror .

"Just watched A Man Called Otto and I've cried so much I've got a headache. Be kind to people who might be having a hard time," another added. "Watched A Man called Otto on Netflix yesterday and it somehow broke my heart and then put it all back together. What an incredible movie, cried lots," one tweeted, as another viewer said she managed to run out of tissues because she was crying so much.

"A Man Called Otto on Netflix is such a beautiful film, the way I cried," another chimed in, as one quipped: "I'd watch it again, I just have to first replace the minerals I cried out during those 2 hours."

Truman Hanks, the less-famed son of Tom Hanks, at 27-years-old made his onscreen debut in the film with his father, taking on the role of a younger Otto. Tom disclosed that the idea to cast Truman was sparked by director Marc Forster’s suggestion, noting the uncanny resemblance Truman bears to him at that age.

"Truman, who is either burdened or blessed by resembling myself at the same age as him, and Marc Forster, our fabulous director, just says, 'You know what? It's always so fake to get somebody else to come in and play you, 'cause they never look right. Could maybe Truman do this?" shared Tom during a chat with Today last year.

Very interesting movie. Too many tragedies for one person. Glad he left everything to someone that needed it.
