Sergio Garcia has last laugh as LIV Golf's biggest issue becoming irrelevant

A constant fall down the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) is no longer a fear of Sergio Garcia after the LIV Golf star played down the importance of the list.

Following its inception in June 2022, the real kink in the breakaway league's armor in their battle with the PGA Tour has been its lack of OWGR accreditation. This sees LIV events continue to go ahead without world ranking points on offer, which has led to their signature names falling down the list.

Garcia is one of the biggest casualties of this, with the Fireballs captain currently loitering in 395th, a world away from his former glories as the second best-ranked player on the planet.

  • At first, it proved to be a huge concern for Garcia and co, but it appears the former Masters champion has become numb to the situation. "To be totally honest, I don't think world ranking points are worth it anymore for us," the former PGA Tour star told GolfMagic.

"Even if we got world ranking points now with the rankings we have like myself down in 390th, it just wouldn't really help the majority of us. We were looking at it and for someone to be able to stay in the top 50 in the world, you would probably have to win like 10 of the 14 tournaments on LIV Golf."

For many the fear of plummeting in the rankings and losing out on a spot in the four major championships was the biggest hurdle preventing them from making the Saudi switch, but it appears these fears are no longer with the OWGR continuing to lose its integrity, and the majors appearing to open other qualifying doors.

"Other options are being talked about at the moment and hopefully, they come around in the very near future," Garcia said of major qualification. "I think at the end of the day the governing bodies that run the majors want to have the best players in the world and a lot of the guys are on the league with us, so they are going to have to figure something out to have the best players there."

This was evident throughout 2024 when Garcia's fellow LIV star Joaquin Niemann was offered an invite into this year's Masters on the back of an impressive start to the year. Niemann was then one of seven members of the breakaway league who were offered a spot in the PGA Championship.

Alongside the Chilean, former green jacket winner Patrick Reed and LIV's 2023 champion Talor Gooch were offered invites. Elsewhere Louis Oosthuizen, Dean Burmester, Lucas Herbert, Adrian Meronk, and David Puig were offered a spot to compete in the second major of the season at Valhalla.
