Alabama legend delivers ominous Texas verdict with ace up Longhorns' sleeve

Former Alabama star Greg McElroy believes Texas is striking fear into its rivals in the race for the national championship, with the No.1 Longhorns yet to reach their full potential.

Texas (6-0) enhanced its credentials as the top team in the nation with a dominant victory over Oklahoma in Saturday's Red River showdown, romping to a 34-3 win at the Cotton Bowl. The win bolstered the Longhorns' impressive resume, which also includes a blowout road victory at Michigan earlier in the season.

McElroy, quarterback of the Alabama team that defeated Texas in the 2010 national championship game, believes the Longhorns' performance in Dallas should send shockwaves to teams across the country because of the imperfections in Steve Sarkisian's team's display.

McElroy is sure Texas is the "most complete team" in college football, but believes it still has a long way to go to realize its full potential.

"Texas is the most complete team and the scary thing is they are just getting started because if you look at the game this past week, Texas made a slow start. This thing could have looked a lot like last year's Red River [a 34-30 win for Oklahoma] with how Texas played offensively," he told 'Always College Football'.

"They got off to a bit of a rusty start at quarterback, but this Texas defense, they just were suffocating. This was consistent harassment that did not let up at any point in the game.

"They had 11 tackles for loss, they had five sacks and the defense really set the tone of the game, which tells you all you need to know. The offense plays poor early and the defense raises its level. That is a sign of a complete team.

"What they have now found is they can play complimentary football. I think Texas right now is the most complete team and I still don't think we have seen a 60-minute performance from them."

Texas appears to have two big obstacles in its way if it is to finish the regular season unbeaten, hosting No. 5 Georgia in Austin on Saturday before taking on Texas A&M at College Station in the final game before the playoffs begin.

Despite the huge praise afforded to the Longhorns in recent weeks, Sarkisian has urged his players to keep their feet on the ground and not get ahead of themselves.

“We need to continue to stay enamored with us and what we need to do and focus on the task at hand and not get caught up in what you guys are talking about or anybody else is talking about,” he said. “It’s not what other people say. It’s actually about what we do.”
