The New York Jets’ trade for Davante Adams is not a good sign for Mike Williams after Aaron Rodgers called out the receiver for running the wrong route.
On Monday Night Football, the Jets fell 23-20 at home to the Buffalo Bills . Rodgers completed 23 of 35 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns, along with a late interception that sealed the defeat - but the four-time MVP insisted the pick occurred due to an error by Williams.
Looking to push the ball downfield, Rodgers launched the ball downfield in the direction of outside receiver Williams. However, the 30-year-old needed to readjust with the ball in flight, allowing cornerback Taron Johnson to snag the ball and secure a costly interception.
Ultimately, the Bills were able to close out the game from that point on while Rodgers fumed on the sidelines immediately after the play. After the game, the 40-year-old addressed the interception and told reporters: “We [were supposed to have] two verticals. Allen's [Lazard] down the seam, Mike's [Williams] down the red line [sideline go-route].
“I’m looking at Allen, he puts his hand up, three guys go with him. So, I'm throwing a no-look to the red line. When I peek my eyes back there [Williams] is running an in-breaker. It's gotta be down the red line.”
Rodgers essentially placed the blame at the feet of Williams, who was meant to run a go-route and instead forced the quarterback to alter his throw late in the motion, which led to the interception. Williams’ error may have been the final straw as the Jets have since moved to complete a blockbuster trade for Adams - a familiar and favorite target of Rodgers.
Adams had been linked with a trade away from the Las Vegas Raiders for some time, with speculation stepping up after he suffered a hamstring injury. On Tuesday, the Jets acquired the All-Pro in exchange for a conditional third-round pick that can become a second-rounder.

Adams is a three-time All-Pro and two-time receiving touchdowns leader, and he represents one of the best offensive weapons in football. Amid trade links to the Pittsburgh Steelers , New Orleans Saints , and Bills, the Jets swooped and Adams joined the likes of Garrett Wilson , Allen Lazard, and Williams in the receiver room.
Ultimately, the Jets now have a strong receiving corps on paper. Wilson is the franchise’s stud receiver while Lazard - another former Green Bay Packers receiver who had a connection with Rodgers - has been in electric form, scoring five touchdowns through six weeks this season including an epic Hail Mary against the Bills.
Meanwhile, Williams has struggled. He has hauled in 10 catches for 145 yards and is largely Rodgers’ fourth or fifth choice option. Adams is now set to bump him further down the pecking order.
The 2-4 Jets are next in action against the 4-2 Steelers on Sunday, Oct. 20.
