Super Bowl LXII is set to be staged in Atlanta a week after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell claimed he “wouldn’t be surprised” if the game gets played outside the United States in the future.

On Tuesday, Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium was confirmed as the host site for Super Bowl LXII in 2028. The announcement was made at the NFL Fall League Meeting in Atlanta following a review of the proposal by the NFL’s Fan Engagement & Major Events Committee and a vote by full ownership.

Super Bowl LXII marks the fourth time the Super Bowl has been hosted in Atlanta. It will be the second time the game has been played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with the first time coming in 2019 as the New England Patriots outlasted the Los Angeles Rams .

“Renowned for its hospitality and rich sports and entertainment culture, Atlanta is a world-class event destination and a natural fit for Super Bowl 62,” said Goodell. “Arthur Blank has been a transformative figure in the Atlanta community, playing a crucial role in leading the bid to bring the Super Bowl back to the city. I have been fortunate to witness firsthand how Arthur continues to drive community engagement and economic development in the Atlanta community through his unwavering commitment to sports and philanthropy.

“We look forward to working with him, the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Sports Council, and all of our partners on the ground to create an unforgettable experience for fans around the world in 2028.”

New Orleans' Caesars Superdome will be the venue for this year's Super Bowl, with San Francisco's Levi's Stadium set to host in 2026, before Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium follows suit in 2027. However, amid the NFL’s desire to expand internationally, speculation surrounds a potential Super Bowl abroad .

Addressing the prospect as the NFL returned to London earlier this month, Goodell said: “We've always traditionally tried to play a Super Bowl in an NFL city - that was always sort of a reward for the cities that have NFL franchises. But things change. It wouldn't surprise me at all if that happens one day.”

No Super Bowl has been hosted outside of the U.S. before. At least four games are held abroad as things stand, with the go-ahead already given for this figure to double in the coming years. Goodell has suggested in the past that the league is looking to increase to 16 international games at some stage.

Meanwhile, Falcons owner and chairman Arthur M. Blank is thrilled with the decision to bring Super Bowl LXII to Atlanta. He said: “This is a tremendous honor for the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia to be selected as host for Super Bowl LXII. Thank you to my fellow owners for their trust in awarding Atlanta this opportunity, and thank you to Commissioner Goodell, Peter O’Reilly, and the entire league for their continued leadership in making the NFL the greatest sports league in the world.

“Mercedes-Benz Stadium was built to host the world’s largest sporting events, and I know I speak for many when I say we are honored to bring it back to Atlanta in 2028 and build off the success of Super Bowl LIII in 2019. I look forward to working alongside our city and state officials as we continue to elevate Georgia as a premier, global sports destination.”
