Tom Brady becomes Las Vegas Raiders owner as NFL vote officially ends playing career

In a vote announced on Tuesday afternoon , future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady's minority ownership stake in the Las Vegas Raiders has been officially approved in a vote amongst NFL owners.

Even with such a limited stake, Brady's ownership will officially end his NFL career. The seven-time Super Bowl winner last played in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022.

In May of 2023, Brady agreed to purchase a minority stake in the Raiders. "it's exciting because he will be just the third player in the history of the National Football League to become an owner," majority owner Mark Davis said at the time.

Brady has a longstanding relationship with Davis. The Raiders have been in the Davis family since Mark's father Al purchased the team in 1966.

Brady and his business partner Tom Wagner officially purchased a joint 10% stake in the organization. The deal was officially codified on Tuesday, meaning at least 24 of the 32 owners approved the purchase.

There have been a few complications in the 17 months since the initial bid. One revolves around Brady's involvement as an analyst for Fox -- he is currently in the first year of a ten-year, $375 million contract with the NFL television partner.

Compared to most other announcers, Brady has more restrictions placed upon him in terms of accessing team facilities and personal player interviews.

Additionally, the Washington Post reported in December how Brady may have received a cut-price deal from Davis. The Raiders majority owner never publically commented on such claims.

According to reports, Davis and former Raiders coach Josh McDaniels were keen to bring on Brady as the team's starting quarterback for the 2023 NFL season. A deal never ultimately developed.

Davis agreed to purchase the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces in 2021 and brought on Brady as a minority owner in 2022. “I am very excited to be part of the Las Vegas Aces organization,” Brady said at the time of the purchase. “My love for women’s sports began at a young age when I would tag along to all my older sisters’ games. They were by far the best athletes in our house!"

However, Brady announced his second retirement from the NFL following Tampa Bay's playoff defeat to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Raiders are off to a 2-4 start in 2024 and traded star receiver Davante Adams to the New York Jets for a conditional third-round pick on Tuesday.

Coach Antonio Pierce's team is slated to host the 1-4 Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. The Raiders currently sit three-and-a-half games behind the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West standings.
