Davante Adams copies Aaron Rodgers as New York Jets contract details emerge

New York Jets wide receiver Davante Adams has restructured his contract after completing his trade from the Las Vegas Raiders , mirroring Aaron Rodgers' gesture when he joined the organization in 2023.

On Tuesday a blockbuster trade was agreed between the Jets and the Raiders, with New York sending a 2025 conditional third-round draft pick for the three-time First Team All Pro. That pick could improve to a second-round pick if Adams is a first or second-team All-Pro this season, or if the Jets reach the AFC Championship game.

With the Jets already paying Mike Williams this offseason after adding Rodgers and Allen Lazard last year, there were concerns over salary cap budgets as Adams was set to make $11.59 million this season. The Jets are only responsible for paying a percentage of what the Raiders owe him, but Adams has made their life easier after restructuring his deal.

Adams has agreed to lower his salary cap number to $3.21 million this season, and two voidable years have been added to the deal. His future at the Jets will be discussed following the conclusion of this season.

Rodgers took a significant pay cut when trading from the Green Bay Packers in 2023, forfeiting $35 million when switching franchises. Rodgers had nearly $110 million guaranteed money on his old contract in Green Bay but signed a new $75 million deal when arriving in New York.

"The team gave up significant pieces for it to just be a one-year deal," Rodgers said at the time. It also meant that his cap last season was just $8.9 million, which equated to 3.9 percent of the Jets' salary cap. Elite quarterbacks in the NFL make up for 20 percent of a team's salary cap on average.

It's a dream reunion for both Rodgers and Adams, who starred together in Green Bay and have missed each other on the field since going their separate ways. Adams even crashed Rodgers' weekly segment on "The Pat McAfee Show" after the trade was announced.

Rodgers joined the show live from the Jets' facility in Florham Park, New Jersey, while Adams was in the building to finalize the deal. "We're back, man," Adams said. "We're back."

Rodgers then added: "Obviously, I'm really excited. It's on us now. We're going all-in." The trade news lifted the mood in the Jets locker room after the team dropped to 2-4 following a 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.

The Jets also parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh last week and promoted defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich to interim head coach for the rest of the season. The Jets offense now looks similar to the Packers' three seasons ago, with Rodgers throwing to Adams and Lazard.
