DWTS' Derek Hough shares he learned his wife Hayley was 'dying' before her performance

Derek Hough got emotional on last night's episode of Dancing With The Stars talking about his wife's brain surgery .

Hayley Erbert Hough made her return to the DWTS stage on October 15, emotionally dancing with her husband during the show's Dedication-themed episode. Before their dance, a prerecorded video played where Derek spoke about the day he thought his wife was going to die .

The Dancing With The Stars judge and former dancer got visibly choked up as he shared details of that day. The two were newlyweds and heading out on tour to perform on their joint Symphony of Dance tour .

Derek detailed that the couple were so excited to be "doing what we loved with the person that we loved." He added: "It just all came to a screeching halt in the most devastating way."

The former Mirrorball Trophy winner recalled that he was on stage, waiting for his wife to join him. "The stage manager walked out and just said, 'Hey, she's not coming on stage,'" he described, "She was on the side of the stage having full seizures and, essentially, dying."

"It's really hard to even put into words other than just pure fear," he continued, "We rush her to the hospital, she's still in her costume, and the doctor came to me and he said that, 'She has a severe brain bleed, so we have to operate right now.'"

The doctor told the devastated husband: "She might not make it and that even if she does make it, she won't be the same person." The emotional prerecorded video also included footage of the couple's wedding and their engagement.

Hayley suffered from a cranial hematoma and had to have an emergency craniectomy. Thankfully, Hayley recovered and Derek shared what happened when she woke up the next morning.

"What happened? Weren't we just dancing?" Hayley had asked Derek. After she spoke, Derek couldn't contain his relief.

He told the camera: "I can't even tell you, just knowing that she was there, that she was in there - the relief I felt."

Hayley relearned to walk and eventually and was able to join her husband for an emotional dance on Tuesday's episode of Dancing With The Stars. After the two danced, they shared a passionate kiss as the crowd applauded. Then Derek stepped back, showcasing his wife as the crowd grew louder and Hayley got visibly emotional.
