Therapuss host Jake Shane admits 'hyper-fixation' with celebrities helped with OCD diagnosis

Jake Shane admitted that his "hyper-fixation" with celebrities helped with his obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

The Therapuss host was a guest on The Squeeze podcast hosted by Taylor and Taylor Lautner. On the Wednesday, October 16 episode, Jake, 24, shared that he was officially diagnosed with OCD at the age of 21 and has struggled with it since. He went on to explain how when someone is diagnosed with the disorder, they tend to "hyper-fixate on things."

He shared an example, saying: "For example, when I was in 6th grade, I hyper-fixated on shampoos. I was clinically addicted to shampoo and I would try out all the different shampoos and line them up like it was like a whole to do."

He then opened up about loving pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Lorde and Beyoncé.

Referencing an article he wrote for Highsnobiety, Jake said: "Something about female pop stars made the world go quiet. (Hyperfixation, a symptom of OCD itself, was in fact my only comfort). My OCD wasn’t fixed, and the intrusive thoughts remained the same, but falling into the world of pop stars gave me the confidence to address these issues head-on."

Jake also explained how when he does concentrate on a pop star, he becomes "their advocate." He was even given the opportunity to collaborate with Olivia Rodrigo in 2023 to promote her single, Vampire.

He said: " Honestly, I was in a rough place at that time, where I was like, 'I feel like I can't think of anything funny.' I was like, ' Olivia Rodrigo 's 'Vampire' is out, let me just react to it.' Female singer-songwriters are my jam. That's my favorite thing to listen to."

Jake is known for his love for Swift. He can be seen wearing her Eras Tour merch in many of his posts or listening to one of her songs. He attended the Eras Tour in Las Vegas and said the show was "magical." He also compared the tour to a play due to the story-telling of her music and the production. He recently revealed that Taylor was his inspiration to go into the fragrance industry.
