Christian Pulisic in firing line with Mauricio Pochettino urged to take action

Tim Howard has called for USMNT star Christian Pulisic to set a better example following his behavior in Mauricio Pochettino ’s first international break.

The USMNT landed a major coup when they convinced former Chelsea and PSG manager Pochettino to lead the country into their home World Cup in 2026. However, the first take on the new-look US team has raised concerns, none more so than the decision regarding their captain .

Having started in the US’ 2-0 win over Panama, Pulisic decided to leave the camp ahead of the defeat to Mexico, returning to AC Milan in an attempt to balance fatigue and injuries in a packed schedule so early on in the season. Also leaving the squad early was Ricardo Pepi, Weston McKennie, Marlon Fossey and Zack Steffen.

But his decision didn’t sit well with Howard, who slammed the 26-year-old’s mentality. “Pulisic is our biggest player, our best player - and this was no normal USMNT camp. It marked the start of Pochettino’s reign and the countdown to the 2026 World Cup,” Howard wrote in the Daily Mail .

“Christian is a good leader of this group. No one can question his commitment to the USMNT and no one can deny that he needs to look after his body. But even if he is not playing, he should still be there - to create the culture and set an example.

“I have been a senior player and a big personality in the locker room. I demanded a lot of people and what I found? The moments to show your gravitas tend to come off the pitch.”

Howard continued to recall the times he joined up with the national team despite being injured or out of favor towards the end of his illustrious career. He explained how he would set an example around the place for the younger players to follow, something that Pulisic’s early departure from the squad hasn’t done.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper added that the USMNT must be stronger on player demands if they’re to build a successful era. “At some point Pochettino, Pulisic and the USA have to flex their muscles and tell Milan: This is how it’s going to go down. We need Christian - to play or just to be around," he continued.

Pochettino described Pulisic’s withdrawal from the squad as a “load management”, despite Milan boss Paulo Fonseca already confirming the winger will be involved in the Serie A game against Udinese on Saturday.

The Argentine said last week about his captain’s absence: "We are a bit concerned. Sometimes we might need to protect him. We will see. (I want) to cultivate a strong relationship with the club and do our utmost to cooperate. When we genuinely need him, he must be in form, happy, and strong. His talent is immense, and he’s a fantastic player."

Pulisic has started the season in fine form in Italy, following up his double-figure goal and assists season last year with six goals and two assists in nine games for Milan in all competitions this campaign.
