NCIS season 22 has kicked off, but who exactly was George Schenck and why did the show dedicate a title card to him?

Fans of CBS have been eagerly anticipating the return of the police procedural drama and were delighted when series 22 premiered on Monday, October 14, picking up six months after the climax of the 21st season.

While viewers were pleased to see Agent Jessica Knight (portrayed by Katrina Law) back in action, the episode concluded with a title card dedicated to George Schenck.

The tribute simply stated: "In Memory of our Dear Friend and Colleague George Schenck", accompanied by a photo of the man himself.

It's no surprise that NCIS fans are intrigued about the individual behind this touching tribute from the long-standing drama.

    Who was George Schenck?

George Schenck had been a significant contributor to NCIS over the years, serving as a writer, showrunner, and former executive producer.

He first joined the team in 2003 as a consulting producer during its initial seasons and was promoted to co-executive producer for NCIS season five.

Schenck played a crucial role in developing the storyline around Jennifer Shepard (Lauren Holly) and her vendetta against Rene Benoit (Armand Assante).

It was during the ninth season that Schenck took on the role of executive producer for the show.

In total, he penned 48 episodes between seasons one and 16, contributing to over 300, with season 16's Tailing Angie being the last episode he wrote.

Earlier this year, Deadline confirmed that Schenck passed away at his home in Brentwood, California on August 3, 2024, at the ripe age of 82.

Following his passing, Mark Harmon, who portrays Agent Gibbs, paid heartfelt tribute via TV Insider: "So sorry to hear the news on George."

Marking Schenck's impact alongside his producing partner Drank Cardea, Harmon added, "The professionalism and tenacity of George and Frank changed the face of the show.

Harmon also expressed gratitude, saying, "I'm so appreciative of the team and teamwork they both represented."

Schenck's career largely revolved around NCIS, but his talents shone through in Westerns like Branded, Honda, Bonanza, and The Wild West as well.

Beyond TV, he directed the '72 sci-fi flick Superbeast and teamed up with Mayo Simon to pen the screenplay for the sci-fi thriller Futureworld.

NCIS season 22 continues every Monday on CBS.
