Chicago Sky starlet Angel Reese insisted that she would love to be Caitlin Clark's teammate in the WNBA in the future - as she hailed her peer as a "great competitor".

The pair both have been instrumental in the rise of the popularity of women's basketball in recent years, from their college days through to their emergence on the professional scene. The rookies have drawn comparisons with legends Magic Johnson and Larry Bird - who enjoyed a fierce rivalry in the NBA after facing off in the NCAA .

When it comes to Reese , she impressed during her maiden WNBA campaign, tallying up an average of 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. Meanwhile, Clark notched up 19.2 points, a league-high 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds on average per game en route to being named Rookie of the Year.

The pair faced each other on four occasions during the campaign, with their rivalry a major talking point throughout what was a landmark season for the warring duo. Now, Reese has reflected on the intrigue surrounding her relationship with Clark , telling the Wall Street Journal : “It’s just a full-circle moment of how women are viewed when it comes to trash-talking.

"It’s okay in men’s sports. We’re going to normalize that in women’s sports as well. So it’s just super-competitive. I think we’re two great competitors," she continued before adding that she hopes to become her rival's colleague in the future: "We brought a lot of fans to this league. And I think we’re going to continue to do that. And one day, hopefully, we’ll be teammates."

As for Clark, it appears that she also holds her contemporary in high regard, as she spoke glowingly about Reese after her season was curtailed through injury. She said: "It’s definitely sad anytime you see anyone go down with an injury, especially people that you came into this league with, whether it’s Cam [Brink], whether it’s Angel.

"Especially Angel, you want to see her finish out this year. Obviously, she’s had a historic year, and she’s done some incredible things. For me, getting to play against her, her motor is up there if not the best in the league, she just doesn’t stop working."

Clark added: "Congratulations to her, I thought she had a tremendous year. I thought she came into the league and really did what she’s done well her entire career as long as I’ve known her. So it’s definitely devastating; it’s never anything you want to see from a player."

Likewise, Reese said of her rival during the All-Star game back in July: "It’s so cool. I know when she gets the ball, I’m running looking for the ball because I know she’s gonna throw it. So, she’s been great to play with. I mean, the future—we’re going to be playing with each other a lot. Hopefully, in four years, we’ll be Olympians together."
