Liam Payne was reportedly under the influence of a drug that is known to cause psychotic attacks and hallucinations, when he died on October 16 in Argentina.

The former One Direction member fell off of his room balcony at the Hotel Casa Sur in Buenos Aires.

The city's police claimed to TMZ that the singer was high on a substance called "Cristal," which they said can cause users to be aggressive and have extreme highs and lows. Liam's behavior before his death was reportedly erratic.

According to the outlet, Liam's hotel TV was smashed and there was drug paraphernalia in the room, with law enforcement noting that his reported drug use was why the room was in shambles.

Police believe that the musician could have been hallucinating due to the substance before he passed away.

In a police statement to The Associated Press , authorities confirmed that he "had jumped from the balcony of his room" as opposed to accidentally falling or being pushed off.

According to a preliminary autopsy report , Liam died from "multiple traumas" that caused both "internal and external bleeding" after the 40-foot fall. In the same statement to AP, local authorities added that they rushed to the hotel in response to an emergency call that came in just after 5 p.m. local time that warned of an "aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol."

Ahead of Liam's death, Hotel Casa Sur’s head of reception made two calls, urging to the 911 operator that they needed help. In the first call, the employee said: "We have a guest who’s off his head on drugs and is destroying everything in his room. We need someone to come."

After the call ended, the same employee called back and pleaded: "I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger." He added: "The room has a balcony and we are afraid he might do something. Just send an ambulance, only an ambulance.”

Liam had checked into rehab back in July to begin a 28-day program, but he walked out after only 48 hours. He had checked into The Priory for treatment at the time. This decision reportedly devastated his close friends and family, as they saw it as him giving up on "overcoming his addictions."
