John Sterling had another iconic play call after Juan Soto fired the New York Yankees to the World Series with a 4-1 series win over the Cleveland Guardians.

The Yankees eliminated the Guardians with a 5-2 win on the road at Progressive Field. Soto , 25, who was acquired by the Yankees last winter, hit a home run and also caught Lane Thomas' effort to bring an end to the ball game.

The Yankees were crowned the 2024 American League champions, having been made to wait 15 years. Commentator Sterling even broke into song. "Ballgame over, American League Championship Series over," Sterling started.

"Yankees win. Theeeeeee Yankees win," Sterling then sang. "And the Yankees are going nuts on the field. It’s a group hug, like the end of the ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show.’ It’s a group hug, and they jump up and down. Terrific. Terrific.”

Soto was over the moon after the game. "It's a great feeling, to hit that homer and get the lead for the team," he said. "And coming through big time."

However, the World Series might be the last few games Soto plays for the Yankees. Soto is a free agent this offseason and ALCS MVP Giancarlo Stanton has sent his teammate a message. “We need him to stay. He’s going to stay. We need to bring it home, and then we’ll bring him home also,” Stanton said.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman added on Soto's situation: "That was the whole purpose of going all-in. We gave up a lot, and it was a one-year deal for a lot of money. And so it was a big chess move, no doubt about it, that was designed to increase our chances. And it did."

Soto won the 2019 World Series with the Washington Nationals. He's hoping for a repeat with the legendary Yankees. "I've wanted it since day one," he said. "I've said it since spring training. Give me every hard moment. Give me every tough [at-bat]. I'm going to step up to the plate and try to do my best."

And his father was watching on from the stands, filled with confidence that his son would be the difference-maker on the night. In the end, he scored a three-run homerun and caught the ball to end the ball game. "I was confident," the elder Soto said to ESPN . "He was waiting for his pitch because he wasn't going to go with the pitcher's pitch. And like he told me, if he makes a mistake or if he repeats it two times, it's gone. And that's how it went."

The Yankees are still waiting to find out who they will be joined by in the World Series. A Shohei Ohtani-led LA Dodgers currently lead the New York Mets 3-2 in their series. Nonetheless, legendary caller Sterling will have another World Series to call starting next week.
