Trent Williams ejected after losing cool vs Kansas City Chiefs as history repeats itself

San Francisco 49ers superstar lineman Trent Williams got himself ejected in what felt like a harsh call after an incident involving Kansas City Chiefs defensive back Bryan Cook.

Late in the fourth quarter of what was another disappointing loss to the Chiefs, Williams and Cook – both wearing their helmets – were entangled before the defensive back pushed Williams in the head. Williams struck back with an aggressive hit – and although Cook threw hands first, Williams was kicked out of the game.

This had not been the first time Williams has been ejected for hitting an opponent in the head while wearing a helmet, famously doing so to former Seattle Seahawks legend and later his 49ers teammate Richard Sherman back in 2012. He also threw a punch at an opponent when the Niners faced the New York Giants in 2023.

The Niners lost to the Chiefs for the fifth time in six years with Patrick Mahomes continuing to get the better of San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan - much to fans' frustrations.

It was a grueling afternoon for both offenses, though, with the two quarterbacks throwing no touchdowns while combining for five interceptions – Mahomes logging two and Purdy ending up with three. But despite the Chiefs' lack of offensive cohesion, their defense limited Purdy and San Francisco's running game with fans fuming across social media.

While many had been angered at Williams' ejection, a vast majority voiced their frustrations towards the team's head coach. One fan had written: "It's tough to see this team ever winning a Super Bowl under Kyle Shanahan," as another wrote: "We went out with a whimper. Pathetic today."

While the Chiefs remain undefeated with a 6-0 record, some may be concerned with Mahomes output this season - throwing more interceptions to touchdowns now this season while failing to get much production out of the likes of Travis Kelce and Xavier Worthy.

After losing Rashee Rice to a season-ending injury, and seeing Amari Cooper and Davante Adams traded to AFC rivals, the Chiefs are likely to make a move at wide receiver prior to the trade deadline on November 5.
