Terry Bradshaw's Russell Wilson opinion ages terribly after giving Sean Payton theory

Terry Bradshaw has been left red-faced after his words backfired when he told Mike Tomlin he'd be making a mistake in benching Justin Fields for Russell Wilson .

Despite Fields leading the Steelers to an impressive 4-2 start, fans, and seemingly Tomlin alike, had become frustrated with the quarterback as a pocket passer while failing to get the best out of their wide receivers. This led to Tomlin making the tough call to bench Fields for Wilson , with FOX Sports analyst Jay Glazer reporting that the head coach went against others opinions in making the quarterback change.

Tomlin had initially named Wilson as the starter heading into the season, but a hamstring injury saw Fields given the opportunity to start and did more than enough to win the four games that he had in the role.

After their win over the Raiders though, Wilson had returned to full health with the coach making the tough call before Bradshaw criticized him prior to Sunday's game with the Jets - that saw the veteran quarterback score three touchdowns to no interceptions while throwing for an impressive 264 yards.

Speaking on the FOX Sports pre-game show, Bradshaw challenged Tomlin's decision to bench Fields for Wilson. He said: "I totally disagree with this decision by Mike Tomlin, the head coach, I would stay with Fields. Fields fits this team's personality. They like to run the football. He's a big strong running quarterback, athletic enough, but also a guy that can move the football through the air. I don't understand the move."

Bradshaw took his comments a step further, adding: "I know that Wilson came over from Denver. But If Sean Payton, one of the greatest offensive minds in the NFL gives up on a guy that's thrown 25 touchdowns and six interceptions after 15 games. I'm telling you there's something wrong with Wilson that I don't know about, but I know this, in my opinion, Wilson should not be starting today."

This had come after Bradshaw had told TMZ: "I'd stay with Fields. I think he's played really good. He's such a great athlete, he can throw, and I think he just fits the team he has right now... Fields should stay."

Tomlin appears to be more than justified in his decision, with the Steelers having a season-high in points scored while emerging star wide receiver George Pickens had his best game of the year, registering 111 yards and a touchdown. Wilson's debut saw him throw the most passing yards in Steelers history, with him now looking set to remain the starter moving forward.
