Inez Thomas has been shaping young minds for 14 years, with the past eight at Leinkauf Elementary School in Mobile.

    To her, the school isn’t just a workplace, it’s a tight-knit community.

"Leinkauf is a family," she says, describing the special bond between the students, staff, and parents.

That supportive environment is what makes the school stand out, and Thomas credits this close connection with the school’s success.

Leinkauf’s atmosphere isn’t just about warmth, though—it’s about progress.

Thomas has been hard at work helping her third graders improve their reading skills, aligning with Alabama’s efforts to raise reading proficiency.

The goal? Ensuring students perform well on the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP).

Strong Gains in Reading and Math

Thomas is proud of the strides her students have made.

She’s seen remarkable improvements not just in reading, but in math as well.

“We’ve made great gains on our ACAP in reading and math,” she shares, emphasizing how proud the school is of its students.

These accomplishments reflect not only the hard work of the children but the dedication of teachers like Thomas who go above and beyond.

It’s clear that for Thomas, teaching isn’t just a job. It’s a calling she’s had since childhood.

“I used to pretend I was a teacher when I was little,” she recalls with a smile.

That passion is what drives her back to the classroom every day, knowing she’s playing a key role in her students’ futures.

    Earning the Golden Apple

    Thomas’ dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Her colleagues and Principal Hope Belle-Payne nominated her for the Golden Apple, an award given to exceptional teachers.

"She’s a great teacher, but more than that, she’s a good person," says Principal Belle-Payne.

"That’s exactly what our kids need—someone who loves them but also sets high expectations."

Her students love her, but they also know she means business.

That balance of care and discipline is what makes her stand out, creating an environment where children can thrive.

    Looking Forward to More Success

As Thomas continues to shape the next generation of students, her work at Leinkauf Elementary shows how powerful dedicated teaching can be.

With a supportive community behind her and a deep personal connection to her profession, she’s setting her students up for success.

The gains her class has made in reading and math are just the beginning of what’s possible when teachers, students, and the community come together.

Inez Thomas’ recognition with the Golden Apple is well deserved, and it’s a reflection of the great work happening every day at Leinkauf Elementary.
