A 25-year-old San Jose man drowned Sunday afternoon at Modesto Reservoir.

Firefighters responded to the reservoir, which is about 20 miles east of Modesto, to a report of a drowning at about 3:06 p.m., according to a Fire Department incident report. Unlike Woodward Reservoir, Modesto Reservoir allows swimming after Labor Day.

The report states firefighters searched for the body, which was later recovered by Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office divers, according to the report.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Luis Dominguez, a 25-year-old San Jose resident.

Sheriff’s Office spokespeople did not respond to requests for more information regarding the drowning, but the department recommends these precautions when swimming:

    • Wear a life jacket. They can be borrowed for free at Modesto Reservoir, as well as several fire stations in the county.
    • Know your limitations when entering any body of water.
    • Moderate your alcohol intake.
    • Always swim with someone else who can provide help or reach out to others during an emergency.
