TVL, WAC, VOL and MLL teams all kicked off league play Friday night in some exciting matchups.

Big Valley Christian in the MLL, Oakdale in the VOL and Davis in the WAC all started the new part of their seasons 1-0, respectively. In the ultra competitive TVL, Orestimba, Hilmar and Hughson opened league play with key wins.

A number of CCAL schools played their final non-league games Friday before they take off next week with byes. Turlock and Downey picked up wins against playoff regulars while Pitman and Gregori fell to a pair of Merced-area programs. Enochs and Modesto will play non-league contests next week before league play starts Oct. 4.

Los Banos 20, Gregori 14: The Jaguars took an early 7-0 lead but the offense could not find its footing. Los Banos took a 14-7 halftime lead and scored again in the fourth quarter. Gregori scored their second touchdown with under five minutes in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars face Turlock next week in their CCAL opener.

Turlock 19, Clovis West 15: Turlock took an early lead and never looked back on the road in its final game before starting CCAL play. The Bulldogs scored all 19 points in the first half and the defense stood strong in the fourth quarter despite allowing nine unanswered second half points.

Big Valley Christian 52, River Islands 8: The Lions’ offense was unstoppable in their first Mother Lode League contest to claim their third win this season. They have bounced back from their Week 2 loss to Waterford with back-to-back wins. They only allowed one first half touchdown and a two point conversion. Big Valley Christian faces Linden next week.

Livingston 21, Ceres 14: Ceres fell to Livingston in the Wolves’ first WAC game after returning to the league from the TVL. After back-to-back shutouts, the Bulldogs allowed three touchdowns.

Downey 35, Edison-Stockton 20: The Knights scored a touchdown in the first quarter and 21 second quarter points to break open a first-half lead that the Vikings could never close. Both teams added a third quarter touchdown.

Orestimba 50, Modesto Christian 0: In their TVL opener, the Warriors scored at least 50 points for the second time this season and recorded their second straight shutout. Orestimba averages 47.5 points a game and has not allowed more than two touchdowns. The Warriors take on Sonora next week in a battle of 4-0 teams.

Atwater 42, Pitman 10: The Pride allowed eight first quarter points and 27 second quarter points but could only counter with a first-half field goal. Both teams added a touchdown in the third quarter and Pitman held Atwater scoreless in the fourth.

Oakdale 54, Mountain House 6: Wes Burford scored four touchdowns, returning a fumble for a score, recording a receiving touchdown and a pair of rushing touchdowns to kick off VOL play Friday night. The Mustangs advance to 4-1 after scoring over 50 points for the second straight game.

Davis 14, Central Valley 0: In head coach Trevor Mew’s first time coaching against his alma mater, Davis took a 7-0 halftime lead. They scored their final touchdown in the third quarter and the defense recorded its first shutout of the season.

Calaveras 55, Riverbank 7: In a battle of unbeaten teams, Riverbank’s offense found the end zone once in the first quarter, taking a 7-0 lead, but Calaveras scored 55 unanswered points to move to 4-0. The Bruins travel to Summerville next week

Hilmar 31, Ripon Christian 21: Hilmar never trailed in its TVL opener Friday night on the road. The Yellowjackets took a 24-7 lead into the fourth quarter. The Knights scored 14 points in the final frame, but could not close the gap.

El Capitan 38, Waterford 6: The Wildcats gave up 265 yards and five passing touchdowns to El Capitan quarterback Sergio Mendoza. Waterford trailed 25-6 at halftime and could not find the offensive production in the second half.

Hughson 28, Ripon 7: The defending section champion Huskies started TVL play with a road win over Ripon. Robert McDaniel completed 16 of 22 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Eli Wilbanks carried the ball 19 times, tallying 119 yards and a touchdown. Colt Foss also rushed for a score. Malakai Sumter and Max Mankins caught touchdown passes.
