Gallo’s latest liquor product is a ‘journey through Mexico’ and is growing in popularity

Spirit of Gallo , the liquor division of E.&J. Gallo Winery, is expanding its profile through a partnership with a brand of mezcal made in Mexico.

The Modesto company will be Mezcal Derrumbes’ exclusive importer in the United States, according to a news release.

“We look forward to expanding our distribution in the U.S. and putting many incredible mezcal regions on consumers’ radars,” said Esteban Morales, co-founder of Derrumbes.

Mezcal is “the ancestor of tequila,” according to National Geographic . While mezcal is also made from the agave plant, the process is a bit different. It begins by smoking the heart of the plant underground for several days, developing mezcal’s distinct smoky flavor.

Unlike tequila, mezcal can be made from any agave plant native to Mexico, National Geographic says. Tequila is made strictly from blue agave.

Derrumbes describes its mezcal as a “journey through Mexico.” There are seven bottle types of Derrumbes, each representing the Mexican state where it was made and highlighting its traditions, flavors and styles.

The states represented are Oaxaca, Michoacan, San Luis Potosi, Zacatecas, Tamaulipas, Durango and Guerrero.

Mezcal Derrumbes ranges from 43% to 48% ABV and a price point of $39.99 to $99.99 per bottle.

Mezcal has experienced a significant rise in popularity, according to the release, fueled by growing consumer interest in artisanal spirits and Mexican culture combined with an increased presence on cocktail menus.

Tequila and mezcal are now the second-largest alcohol category by revenue behind vodka, which has been the top-selling spirit in the nation since the 1970s, according to previous Sacramento Bee reporting.

“As a family-owned brand, we have found the perfect partner in Gallo to help us — and all the mezcaleros families we know — continue to grow,” Morales said.
