    Region Athlete of the Week ballot packed with great candidates

    The high school sports season is heading into the stretch run.

    With teams gearing up for state-tournament runs and some major competitions on the schedule, there are plenty of great candidates for Monroe County Region Athlete of the Week for May 13-19

    There are athletes from all 14 Region schools on the ballot.

    Make sure to cast your vote. You can vote once per hour until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

    Last week’s winner was St. Mary Catholic Central sprinter Adela Illes.

    Here are the candidates in alphabetical order:

    Michael Armetta, Jefferson boys track and field: Won regional championships in the high hurdles and long jump.

    Carter Bahn, Dundee golf: Claimed medalist honors in the second straight LCAA jamboree, shot the fifth-best round in the Monroe County Championship.

    Keola Botts, Flat Rock girls track and field: Set a school record with a toss of 123 feet, 4 inches, winning a regional discus title.

    Courtney Bovair, Airport girls track and field: Won the 800 and 1,600 meters and took second in the 3,200 in a Division 2 Regional.

    Kiernan Brown, Dundee softball: Hit three home runs and drove in eight runs in a sweep of Adrian Madison, racked up four hits including two doubles against Wyandotte Roosevelt.

    Brandon Commet, Ida boys track and field: Set a school record in the low hurdles and also won the highs in the Division 3 regional at Adrian Madison.

    Matt Foor, Airport boys track and field: Set a Monroe County Region record with a discus throw of 177-1 and also won a regional championship in the shot-put.

    Teddy Gault, Summerfield boys track and field: Won a regional championship in the high jump and took second in the long jump and qualified for the state meet in the high hurdles.

    Adela Illes, SMCC girls track and field: Claimed regional titles in the 100 and 200 meters, anchored a winning relay and helped another relay qualify for state.

    Max Jenness, Milan golf: Won medalist honors in all three of his team’s during the week.

    Seth Jones, Airport baseball: Threw four shutout innings and delivered three hits as the Jets handed New Boston Huron its first Huron League loss of the season.

    Carter Klawonn, Bedford golf: Shot a round of 75 to win medalist honors at the Monroe County Championship then shared medalist honors in a dual-match against Ann Arbor Skyline,

    Nick Kosiba, New Boston Huron golf: Shot 76 for the second-best round, carded a 33 in a win over Riverview, then shot 76 at the Gibraltar Carlson Marauder Invitational.

    Avry Madalinski, Bedford soccer: Scored a hat trick in a win over Ypsilanti Lincoln.

    Keegan Masters, Whiteford boys track and field: Led Bobcats to regional championship by winning the 800 and 1,600 meters.

    Nyah Mullins, Bedford softball: Went 5-for-8 with two doubles and a home run in a sweep of Ann Arbor Pioneer; homered and collected four hits in a split with Pinckney.

    Unity Nelson, Whiteford softball: Reached 1,000-career strikeouts and pitched the Bobcats to a win over 24-5 Saline.

    Julia Perry, Jefferson softball: Won four games during the week to top 40 career victories and 500 career strikeouts.

    Breylon Richards, Monroe baseball: Homered in each game of a sweep of Ypsilanti Lincoln.

    Brennan Runyon, SMCC baseball: Earned a win and had two hits in a win over Jefferson, then delivered a game-winning hit in the 10th inning against Flat Rock.

    Teegan Simmons, Monroe boys track and field: Won regional championships in the shot-put and discus and also qualified for the state meet in the low hurdles and helped the 1,600 relay qualify.

    Rylie Sulewski, Gibraltar Carlson tennis: Won the No. 2 singles title to help the Marauders win a regional championship.

    Beth Sweeney, Mason girls track and field: Won regional championships in both hurdles and high jump and ran on a state-qualifying relay.

    Jayden Yancey, Flat Rock baseball: Tossed a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts against Grosse Ile.
