Three Region track and field records fall during 2024 season

Matt Foor started throwing the shot-put and discus in the fourth grade.

He was following in the footsteps of his father, Dan Foor – a former state champion in the shot-put at Saginaw Eisenhower.

Not long after he took up the sport, Matt researched the bests in Monroe County Region history for the shot-put and discus.

“I started throwing in the fourth grade,” he said. “I looked up all the records then.”

He has been chasing those marks ever since.

The Airport student finally beat one of them in his senior year, throwing the discus 177-1 to eclipse the mark of 176-3 set way back in 1982.

“It was amazing,” Foor said of his performance in a Division 2 Regional at Chelsea. “I had been chasing it for so long. When I finally got it, it was a weight off my shoulders.”

Oddly, Foor considered himself more of a shot-put specialist for most of his career.

“I really didn’t pick it up in the discus until my sophomore year when I threw 140,” he said. “My freshman year I was throwing in the 70s until my last meet when I hit 110.”

Foor says the shot-put is based more on brute strength. The discus requires more technique.

“That’s why I started liking the discus,” he said. “In the shot-put, you can get away with not being as good technically. You can’t get away with that in the discus.”

Foor is committed to playing football this fall at Eastern Michigan, but believes his career as a thrower in track and field is not over.

“I am going to just play football my freshman year, but I talked to both coaches,” he said. “I’ll probably walk on for the track team next year.”

Foor’s mark in the discus was one of three Region records to fall this spring. The other two came from Huron League teams in girls sprint relays.

St. Mary Catholic Central’s Division 3 state champion quartet of MaryAlice Lynch, Ashley Ruhlig, Jessica Costlow and Adela Illes ran :49.8 to tie the Region record set by Milan in 1983.

Milan might have been forced to share that record, but got one of its own when Madison Lancaster, Angelina Wilson, Marissa Beck and Malea Wourman ran 1:45.54 in the Division 2 state finals.

That wiped off the boards the record of 1:45.8 set by Milan in 1983.
