LASALLE — The emotional and mental stresses of caregiving will be discussed at this year’s Monroe County Caregiver Summit. The summit is set for 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at LaRoy’s Hall, 12375 S. Telegraph Road. Admission is free.

The registration deadline has been extended to Aug. 15. To register, call 734-240-3290. The summit is sponsored by the Monroe Aging Consortium.

"The last Caregiver Summit was held Sept. 29, 2022. We had 125 people in attendance. In 2023, we held a Safety Summit with Sheriff Troy Goodnough as the speaker,” said Sandie Pierce, an event organizer and the director of Monroe Center for Healthy Aging.

"Caregiving affects a lot of people,” Pierce said. “According to a 2017 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 22.3% of adults reported providing care or assistance to a friend or family member in the past 30 days.  One in three caregivers (31.3%), provided 20 or more hours per week of care, and over half (53.8%) have given care or assistance for 24 months or more. Having support is helpful."

Eight area organizations are sponsoring this year’s summit. AgeWays is the major sponsor. Other sponsors are Integrity Insurance Solutions, Merkle Funeral Service, IHM Senior Living Community, Sobaks Home Medical, Monroe Home Care Shoppe, Trinity Health, Rehabilitaiton Hospital of Northwest Ohio and Visiting Angels.
