Tell me, is there anything better than a delicious slice of pizza?

    Quick answer — no.

This American food staple has been around since the 6th Century B.C., with the first modern pizza (adding tomato to the recipe) can be traced back to Naples, Italy, in the 18th Century. Even now, thousands of years after that very first pie was baked, it's still going strong.

    How strong you ask?

Just take a gander at some of these interesting and fun facts about this delicious round delicacy!

    — According to a recent survey conducted by Mintel, 93% of Americans have had pizza within the past month.

    — Of the more than five billion pizzas sold worldwide, approximately three billion are sold in the United States each year — that’s 46 slices a year per person.

    — Nearly 80% of Italian cheese production in the United States is mozzarella, because of, you guessed it, pizza!

    — Approximately 36% of Americans think pizza is perfect for breakfast (myself included).

    — The Russian Space Agency was paid more than a $1 million to deliver a pizza to the International Space Station. Russian cosmonaut, Yuri Usachov, will forever be known as the first person to receive a pizza delivery while in orbit.

    — Pepperoni is the topping of choice for most pizza-lovers, while anchovies ranked at the bottom of the list of preferred toppings.

Whether you like you pizza with extra cheese and pineapple, or extra sauce and bacon — we love pizza.

Now, we at the Monroe News want to know where the best pizza place in Monroe County can be found. It doesn't matter if it's dine-in, carryout or whatever — where is that wonderful place offering up the most wonderful slice of pizza in the county?
