MONROE – Airport’s girls golf team built a cushion for itself during the Huron League regular season.

The Jets needed that cushion Thursday as St. Mary Catholic Central won the league tournament, but Airport still took the overall league title.

“We just had to be fourth or better (in the league tournament),” Airport coach Casey McDowell said.

McDowell’s team shot a round of 397 Thursday at Sandy Creek Golf Course to finish second to SMCC’s 379.

“I’m proud of them,” SMCC coach Jeff Kansier said. “We knew going it that it was very, very unlikely that we would catch Airport. … The girls played one of their best 18-hole rounds in a few years.”

Nora Kinsey (90), Lauren Tolliver (94), Tori Busen (97) all earned spots on the All-League team and Meadow Paolino added a 98 for the Kestrels.

“This gives us a little confidence heading into regionals,” Kansier said.

Airport, which built its lead in the league by winning a league jamboree and all seven of its dual matches, had the meet medalist in Sophie Bucki, who carded an 88.

Rounding out the top four for the Jets were Hannah Roof (96), Raegan Budzios (103) and Liv Tilley (110).

Airport won its only other league championship four years ago. The Jets all but clinched the title Wednesday with a 197-200 dual-meet win over SMCC.

“Yesterday against SMCC was a super-tense match,” McDowell said. “It came down to the last hole, the last grouping. After that, we kind of knew where we were in the league standings. We might have been a little too relaxed today.”

Kansier said there is always great competition when his team meets Airport on the golf course.

“A lot props to Airport,” he said. “They are very well coached and those girls are a good group to play against. I really appreciate the camaraderie between us and Airport.”

The two teams will have a rematch Monday in the Monroe County Championships at Monroe Golf & Country Club.
