MONROE – Monroe’s boys soccer team got the state tournament off to a great start by thrashing Taylor 10-0 Wednesday.
Vishwas Joshi led the way with five goals and Brian Palmer racked up a goal and four assists.
Also finding the back of the net were Jack Venne, Jovanny Gallegos, Logan Brockway and Edwin Sanchez.
Aiden Gray and Israel Vargas each had a pair of assists and Cooper Robinson and Gallegos added one each.
“We were just too strong for a spirited Taylor team,” Monroe coach Ian Cook said. “I’m glad all 24 boys got to play. Next week will obviously be a much sterner test and we will be prepared for that.”
The Trojans will play Woodhaven, a 3-0 winner over Wyandotte Roosvelt, in in the district semifinals at 7 p.m. Monday.
The first semifinal that day at 5 p.m. will pit Bedford against Allen Park.
Bedford beat Lincoln Park 2-0 Wednesday.
"It was a competitive game with Bedford dominating the play but Lincoln Park defended well," Bedford coach David Kidd said.
Both Bedford goals came in the second half. Brandon McCloud scored the first off an assist by Mika Miciek, then Miciek netted the second on a direct kick. Caleb Parsons logged the shutout with plenty of help from his defense. He only had to make two saves.

Airport blanks Bears
CARLETON – Airport moved into the semifinals of the Division 2 district being hosted by New Boston Huron with an 8-0 victory over Jefferson Wednesday.
The Jets move on to the semifinals to play the winner of the Gibraltar Carlson vs. Tecumseh matched scheduled for Thursday.
Ida trips Flat Rock
IDA – Ida tuned up for the state tournament with a 9-2 win over Flat Rock Wednesday.
Brady McBride scored both Flat Rock goals with Mitchell Smith picking up an assist.

Two Bedford teams champs
WILLIS – Two Bedford doubles teams took first place Wednesday in a Division 2 regional at Ypsilanti Lincoln.
Carter Ryan and Taylor Burgermeister defended their No. 1 seed at No. 1 doubles by winning three straight matches.
Malakai Gorzyca and Kyle Burger climbed from the second seed to champions at No. 4 doubles.
Both duos won all of their matches in straight sets.
The Mules just missed qualifying for state for the third consecutive season, finishing in fourth place. North Farmington, South Lyon East and South Lyon claimed the top three spots.
“The whole team played great at regional to set the tone for a very good future of the program that is ready to take the next step forward,” Bedford coach Eric Cukierski said.

Milan’s Parris goes on run
MILAN – A string of 10 consecutive service points in the opening set by Lauryn Parris propelled Milan to a 25-13, 25-15, 25-23 victory over Airport Wednesday in the second round of the Huron League Tournament.
Malea Wourman racked up 13 kills for the 25-2 Big Reds and Ava DeMond, Emma Budd and Lana Pacholke also were strong at the net. Madison Slack played well.
Renee Shrewsbury (12 digs, 9 kills) and Joelle Shrewsbury (20 assists) led 14-12-1 Airport.
Huron stops Jefferson
NEW BOSTON – "We has a really great day on offense and defense," New Boston Huron coach Kaitlyn Hinojosa said after at 25-16, 25-13, 25-12 victory over Jefferson in the Huron League Tournament Wednesday.
Ellen Town recorded 15 kills and 7 digs and Ava Ryan finished with 18 assists and 12 digs. Other Huron standouts were Simone Cicotte: and Aubrey Perhase.
Carlson’s Wilson gets 13 kills
GIBRALTAR – Lauren Wilson rang up 13 kills and Addy Wallace 9 to lead Gibraltar Carlson past Lincoln Park 25-15, 25-23, 25-21 Monday.
Emma Ferguson was credited with 14 assists and Angela Sandoval led the defense with 12 digs.
PREP SWIMMING
Monroe gets home meet
MONROE – Monroe got a surprise home meet Monday because of pool issues at Dexter, but fell 105-81.
Sophia Smith, Phoebe Lietaert, Delani Willey and Abby Dieckmann won the 400-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Ana Bredschneider and freshmen Emerson Gruber and Blayne Lynch recorded strong performances.
RUNNING
Brady Memorial Saturday
MONROE – The Sean Brady Memorial 5K run and 1-mile run-walk will be held Saturday at Munson Park in conjunction with the Dave Bork Classic.
Both events will take part at 10 a.m. and carry a $25 entry fee. All proceeds will go toward the Sean Brady Scholarship Fund.
