    Bedford football moves to 4-3; Milan, SMCC, Ida, Carlson soccer win

    ANN ARBOR – Bedford got Week 7 of the high school football season off to a great start Thursday with a 31-20 victory over Ann Arbor Huron.

    The Mules led 21-0 at halftime and cruised to a win that pushed their record to 4-3.

    “The first half was really solid,” Bedford coach John Phillips said. “We subbed in some guys in the second half and they hit some big plays on us.”

    Jacob Spoonmore (12, 1 yards) and Isaac Henman (5, 31) each ran for a pair of Bedford touchdowns and Jack Decker booted a 32-yard field goal and four extra points.

    Trenton Smithson ran for 83 yards, Cole Johson led the defense with six tackles and Tyson Bert intercepted a pass.

    PREP SOCCER

    SMCC opens with win

    MONROE – St. Mary Catholic Central opened the state tournament with a 2-0 victory over Ypsilanti Arbor Prep Thursday.

    Tyler Rutkowski netted the first goal for the Falcons, then Kien Clawson made it 2-0 as he converted a nice pass from Jacob St. Pierre.

    SMCC will play in the semifinals at Plymouth Christian at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

    Milan, Ida into semis

    Milan and Ida both won 8-0 Thursday to move into the semifinals of the Division 3 district being hosted by Grosse Ile.

    They will play each other Monday.

    Fred Brown scored four goals to lead Milan.

    “He just produced tonight,” Milan coach Phil Hayes said. “He was phenomenal.”

    Nolan Matley added two goals and Wesley Murphy and Caiden Lambrix had one each.

    “Overall, everybody played great,” Hayes said of his 11-2-4 team.

    Ida rolled over Taylor Prep.

    Carlson advances

    GIBRALTAR – Gibraltar Carlson held off Tecumseh for a 1-0 victory in the opening round of the Division 2 district being hosted by New Boston Huron.

    The Marauders advance to play Airport in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Monday. The first game that evening at Huron features the host school battling Trenton at 5:30 p.m.

    PREP GOLF

    Bucki, Burke, Carlson to state

    YPSILANTI – Sophie Bucki of Airport and New Boston Huron’s Brooklyn Burke finished 1-2 in the individual standings and Gibraltar Carlson was second as a team in the Division 2 Regional at Pine View.

    All of them qualified for the state finals.

    Bucki shot a round of 92 and Burke finished with 97. Bucki had the third-best overall score.

    Carlson’s round of 400 was second only to champion Dearborn Divine Child with 397.

    The Marauders had great balance as Madilyn Peterson shot 97, Ella Atkinson 98, Andria Konczal 102 and Madison Cooper 103.

    Cumbo logs leads Rams

    ADRIAN – Chrissy Cumbo’s round of 105 led eighth-place Flat Rock in the Division 3 regional at Wolf Creek.

    Teammate Elyse Rogier shot 112 and Ava Swaney of Milan checked in at 117.

    PREP VOLLEYBALL

    Mason duo sharp

    ADRIAN – Brooke Langenderfer logged 41 assists, including 29 that were converted into kills by Elizabeth Sweeney, in a 25-21, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23 win over Lenawee Christian Thursday.

    Mason, 36-15 overall and 8-0 in the Tri-County Conference, got 28 digs from Jayanna Willets and 16 digs and 8 kills from Zoie Stubleski.

    Whiteford rolls to win

    MORENCI – Addeson Cousino recorded 37 assists and Liv Ruehle 38 digs and 6 aces in a 25-13, 25-19, 25-18 win over Morenci Thursday.

    Maylie Mullins added 13 kills and Alaina McClain 10.

    PREP TENNIS

    Carlson places fifth

    ALLEN PARK – Gibraltar Carlson finished fifth with 11 points in the Division 2 regional at Allen Park.

    Preston Eighmey (No. 1 singles), Kyle Salisbury (No. 2 singles) and Chase Moore-Zac Moore (No. 2 doubles) lost in the semifinals for the Marauders.

    Birmingham Groves and Birmingham Seaholm tied for first with 28.
