A renovated Garden District mansion of 6,500 square feet is for sale on Gilmer Avenue near Trinity Presbyterian Church. The two-story design was built in 1910 and provides six bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms.

But there is much more to the story of this home, Realtor Sally Byrd said. “The home at 1604 Gilmer Avenue was rebuilt from a home on Court Street that was cut in two pieces and moved!” she said. “The second level was seamlessly added for a total of six bedrooms and four and a half baths. Constructed with reclaimed materials and attention to detail, the home is truly a work of art! A detached guest house with a similar architectural design and a beautiful gunite pool with a hot tub were added later.”

The Garden District is located on the west side of Norman Bridge Road, opposite Old Cloverdale. The neighborhood includes several beautiful churches, charming homes, the Governor’s Mansion, and greenspaces.

“The Garden District is steeped in history and the exceptional character and craftsmanship of yesteryear is evident throughout,” Byrd said. “The Garden District is convenient to downtown and Midtown. Built in the early 1900s, these one-of-a-kind homes feature artesian architecture including English Tudor, craftsman and traditional southern designs.”

The Garden District is known for towering trees, lush landscaping, front porches, wide streets, and stunning columns. “Reminiscent of a stately southern past, residents enjoy the surroundings, walking and spending time outdoors on the large, treed lawns,” Byrd said. “The Garden District also is convenient to shopping, dining and has easy access to the interstate.”

The home at 1604 Gilmer Avenue sits beautifully on the .61-acre lot. The design features wood floors, a four-car garage, multiple fireplaces, a study, sunroom, bonus room, an antique telephone booth, and a saloon door/folding table, as well as recycled antique heart pine, oak, and poplar.“This unique offering is a ‘like-new’ old home,” Byrd said. “It has the character and charm of an old home combined with newer plumbing, updated electrical, modern conveniences, and period fixtures. The original leaded windows, added storm windows and doors, and Nest thermostats all add energy efficiency. The well-landscaped grounds include a detached four-car garage with a storage area, a greenhouse, a pirate ship play area, and an underground sprinkler system.”

The gourmet kitchen has granite countertops, a Jenn-Air gas stove, a Subzero refrigerator/freezer, double wall ovens with convection oven, and Kohler fixtures. The owner's suite and guest suite are located downstairs. The upstairs rooms feature beautiful, vaulted wood ceilings.

The home is open and bright. The foundation extends 17 feet underground to limestone bedrock and rises on 56 caissons, all tied together with rebar and steel, Byrd said.

The two-bedroom, one bath 830 square foot guest house includes a full kitchen. The custom gunite pool has a tanning ledge and a hot tub, as well as the pirate-ship play area. A gardener will love the greenhouse.

The property is for sale for $825,000. “You could not build a home with this quality and craftsmanship for anywhere close to $825,000!” Byrd said.
