PRATTVILLE − Five Big Lots locations across Alabama closing, part of a national effort to close about 300 of the discount store locations due to economic conditions.

The Prattville store is one of the locations that will be closed. The Montgomery store on the Atlanta Highway will remain open, according to the store's site. Montgomery also has a Big Lots distribution center on Selma Highway.

The discount chain operated 1,389 stores across the nation before announcing in July that it would be closing stores. It will close about 300 stores, amounting to about 20 percent of its U.S. footprint.

Big Lots stores in Bessemer, Troy, Sylacauga and a Huntsville location in the Northwest Westside Centre are also closing.

The Prattville location is the second anchor store in the Premiere Place Shopping Center to close. In April, Shoe Station announced is was moving from its location in Premiere Place to the closed Books-A-Million location at High Point Town Center. Officials with McClinton and Company, the firm that built and operates Premiere Place could not immediately be reached for comment.

In addition to Big Lots, Rose's Express discount store in the Midtown Shopping Center is also closing. Company representatives did not immediately respond to questions about the move.
