In a statement released on Thursday, Chiles shared her disappointment, saying, “I have no words. This decision feels unjust and comes as a significant blow, not just to me, but to everyone who has championed my journey.”

The controversy began when Chiles initially finished fifth with a score of 13.666. After Team USA coach Cecile Landi appealed to add a missing element in Chiles’ routine, her score was increased by 0.1, earning her the bronze medal. The Romanian Gymnastics Federation challenged this adjustment, leading the Court of Arbitration for Sport to review the case. The court found that Landi’s appeal was submitted four seconds past the deadline, which invalidated it and required Chiles to return her medal.

Despite USA Gymnastics’ appeal and new evidence, the court refused to reconsider the case. Chiles expressed her confidence in the appeal, stating, “I am now confronted with one of the most challenging moments of my career. I will make every effort to ensure that justice is done.” She added, “I believe at the end of this journey, the people in control will do the right thing.”

Chiles, who had not publicly addressed the issue before, also thanked her supporters: “I am overwhelmed by the love I have received over the past few days. I am also incredibly grateful to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, USAG, and the USOPC for their unwavering support during this difficult time.”

Following the ruling, USA Gymnastics pledged to keep fighting for Chiles, stating, “We are deeply disappointed and will continue to pursue every possible avenue, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure just scoring and placement for Jordan.”

In addition to her bronze medal challenge, Chiles also won a gold medal as part of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team in the all-around event at the Paris Olympics.
