You'll pay a 5% surcharge at checkout if you don't have a membership. It's also worth noting that some online Costco items are members-only, meaning they aren't available for sale without being logged in as a member.
The additional surcharge expense may not be a huge deal if you place a small order, but the fee could add up if you place a sizable order. If you decide to join, you'll have the option to do so at checkout. Once you become a member, the surcharge will be removed from your total.

Finally, consider your finances. At the time of writing, a Costco membership costs $60 to $120 per year. Only spend money on a membership if it's within budget. If you can afford the cost and will use the benefits provided, it may be a smart idea to join.

If you've been thinking about becoming a Costco member, you should know that membership prices are about to increase $5 to $10 per year. As of Sept. 1, 2024, a Gold Star membership will cost $65 annually, and the Executive membership will cost $130. By joining before September, you can save yourself a few dollars on your first year of membership.
